2Biography
Clarence John Laughlin was born in lake Charles,
Louisiana .He attended high school for only one
year then went off to support his family. Believe
it or not, he was interested in writing and
poetry before photography. In 1934, was when he
began photography. He was influenced by the work
of 5 certain people Alfred Satellite, Paul
Strand, Edward Weston, Man Ray, and Eugene Alget.
His first major documentation was of New Orleans
architecture. Laughlin was known for taking
haunting and disturbing pictures. He published a
book in 1948 of photographs of southern
plantation mansions called Ghosts Along The
Mississippi.

introduced? What technique did he use?
Clarence John Laughlin was famous for his
photographs he took. The photographs he created
were all done in black white to get the
disturbing/scary feeling to them. His pictures
were also not exactly normal or real. He made
each picture have some sort of twist to them.

Many critics actually credit him as being the
first true surrealist photographer in the United
States! They, as well as everyone else in the
1930s respected his work greatly.

5Why do people think his work is so great?
He was an extraordinarily prolific American
surrealist photographer who has consistently
produced hauntingly beautiful and disturbing
images since the late 1930s. He combines
still-life's, architectural photos, abstractions,
and original, romantic mystical photos. Because
he had a variety things in his photography,
people thought his work was so great.

I think that Laughlins work is pretty amazing.
Not to many people do such a good job at creating
such haunting pictures. Seeing how his technique
is so original rare, he definitely should be
famous. He deserves the fame.
