Glaciers can be found in the polar regions and in
mountains all over the world.
3A valley is a low place between mountains.
This valley is in Glacier National Park in
Montana.

surrounds a continent.
There are 5 oceans on Earth.
5A continent is one of several large landmasses on
Earth.
There are seven continents on the Earth.
6A lake is a large body of water surrounded by
land on all sides.

Most of the worlds lakes are in the northern
hemisphere, and many lakes are artificial or
man-made.
7A canyon is a deep valley with very steep sides -
often carved from the Earth by a river.

Spearfish Canyon is in the Black Hills National
Forest.
8A river is a natural stream of water flowing
towards an ocean, lake, or another stream.
The Missouri River
There are rivers on every continent on Earth.
9A volcano is an opening, or rupture, in a
planet's surface or crust, which allows hot,
molten rock, ash, and gases to escape from below
the surface.
There are volcanoes on every continent on Earth.
10A swamp is a type of freshwater wetland that has
spongy, muddy land and a lot of water. Many
trees and shrubs grow in swamps.
The Everglades are in southern Florida.
11A mountain is a very tall, high, natural place on
Earth - higher than a hill.
Mount Everest is in Nepal. It is the tallest
mountain on Earth at 29,029 feet.

Beth Bury is a third grade teacher at Wilson
Elementary in Rapid City, SD. She has been
married to her husband, Ken for 22 years. They
have two teenage sons, and two silly black dogs.
Beth enjoys reading, being outdoors, playing and
working on the computer, and spending time with
family and friends.
