Title: Saying sorry is not enough

1
Saying sorry is not enough!
  • Understanding the power of and the need for
    repentance.

2
Understanding the words!
  • Old Testament (Hebrew) to repent
  • to turn
  • to return
  • to turn back
  • New Testament (Greek) metanoein to repent
    to change ones mind

3
This means.
  • Repentance is an
  • inner decision
  • of the mind and will
  • to turn away
  • from sin
  • resulting in an
  • outward change
  • in our behaviour.

4
A Bible Example Luke 1517-20
  • "When he came to his senses, he said, 'How many
of my father's hired men have food to spare, and
here I am starving to death! I will set out and
go back to my father and say to him Father, I
have sinned against heaven and against you. I am
no longer worthy to be called your son make me
like one of your hired men.' So he got up and
    went to his father..

5
Firsts things first!
  • Recognising our sinful condition and our
sinfulness and seeking to turn back to Gods ways
is the first thing that God requires of us.
  • Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings
about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying
again the foundation of repentance from acts that
lead to death, and of faith in God, Hebrews 61

6
Remorse and repentance.
  • Remorse feeling and saying sorry (maybe feeling
sorry that you were caught out!) is only part of
    the process of true repentance.
  • Afterwards, as you know, when he (Essau) wanted
to inherit this blessing, he was rejected. He
could bring about no change of mind, though he
sought the blessing with tears. Hebrews 1217
  • We need to hate our sin with a passion!

7
Blind to ourselves
  • The Story of the Frog!

8
The road to true faith
  • "a voice of one calling in the desert, 'Prepare
the way for the Lord, make straight paths for
him.'" And so John came, baptising in the desert
region and preaching a baptism of repentance for
the forgiveness of sins. Mark 13-4
  • Repentance is the only way to true faith!

9
It all starts with God
  • Repentance starts with God. Man by himself cannot
repent unless God opens his spiritual eyes to
show him his true spiritual condition.
  • God has to move first (Turning the hearts of the
Father to the children! Malachi 46)
  • "No-one can come to me unless the Father who sent
me draws him, and I will raise him up at the last
    day. John 644

10
A word of warning!
  • Empty religious activity and exercises cannot
    save us
  • Now there were some present at that time who
told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate
had mixed with their sacrifices. Jesus answered,
"Do you think that these Galileans were worse
sinners than all the other Galileans because they
suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you
repent, you too will all perish. Luke 131-3
