Reading Strategies

• Focus on one strategy at a time, and spend
  time practicing that strategy over several
  lessons. Research tells us that a strategy will
  have to be reinforced up to 7 times before it
  becomes automatic!

• The goal of Guided Reading
• Help students develop the strategies they need in
  order to become independent, lifelong readers.
• Make sure the text provides opportunities for
  teaching the objectives.

• Two Questions
• 1. What are your students learning about becoming
  better readers?
• 2. What are your students learning about a
  specific piece of text?

Reading Strategies

• During reading
• Listen to the students to note strategy use and
  take advantage of teaching opportunities
• When a student makes a miscue, be sure to allow
  enough time for student to self-correct
• Wait time of 3-5 seconds
