  • What I do, I do not understand. For I did not
    do what I want, but what I hate. St. Paul (Rm
    715)
  • Sin lives in us. It is a major barrier preventing
    us from living a moral life.
  • Only Through our understanding of sin can we
    learn the antidote to sin conversion.

The Definition of Sin
  • Quite simply, according to the CCC, sin is an
    offense against God whereby sinners turn from
    Gods love through a false love of self (pride).
  • An offense against reason, truth and right
    conscience.

Where Do We See Sin?

  • lying, holding grudges,anger,being
    envious,disobeying
  • In our school
  • cheating, gossiping, exploiting, being lazy

Original Sin
  • Adam and Eve deliberately violated a command of
    God.
  • Their outward act of disobedience was the
    manifestation of their interior rebellion against
    God (pride).
  • Their personal sin affected themselves and
    others.

What is Concupiscence?
  • Concupiscence is a basic human inclination toward
    evil.

  • Social Sin is a cycle of sin, violence, and
    injustice caused by individual sins that lead to
    collective sin.

The Seven Capital Sins
  • Capital means grave, having serious
    consequences. These sins are considered serious
    because they are the underlying causes for most
    evil habits (vices).
  • Pride
  • Greed (Avarice)

Pride
Cloth yourself, all of you with humility toward
one another, for God opposes the proud but gives

Take heed, and beware of all covetousness for a
mans life does not consist in theabundance of

  • Immoderate desire for earthly goods love of
    money or possessions rather than loving God and

Let not lust overcome me, and do not surrender me
to a shameless soul

Sirach 236
  • Inordinate, unrestrained craving for pleasure,
    especially sexual pleasure.

Anger
Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak,
slow to anger, for the anger of man does not work
the righteousness of God. James 1 19-20
  • Intemperate desire for revenge hostile and
    wrathful feelings toward others.

Gluttony
Healthy sleep depends on moderate eating he
rises early and feels fit. The distress of
sleeplessness, and of nausea and colic are with
the glutton Sirach 3120
  • Unrestrained, immoderate consumption of food or
    drink.

Envy
Where jealously and selfish ambition exist, there
will be disorder and every vile practice.

James 314-16
  • Sorrow over anothers good fortune covetousness
    jealousy over anothers possessions or
    characteristics.

Sloth
Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle
person will suffer hunger. Proverbs 1915
  • Laziness in keeping the faith or practicing
    virtue neglecting to do ones duties out of
    lethargy.

  • Just as vice, or habits of evil, destroy a
    persons ability to achieve his or her potential
    and seriously affect human society, virtue, a
    habit of good is a necessary part of what it
    means for any person to be truly human

The Good News - Reconciliation
  • Reconciliation shows us the value of turning from
    sin and mending relationships.
  • Confession emphasizes the owning up to our sins
    as a sign we are sorry for them.
  • Penance equates with conversion.
