Project Control with PERT/CPM

2
An Overview of PERT/CPM and Gantt Charts
  • Construction of the Network
  • Activity-on-Arc Approach Each activity
represents an activity. The nodes correspond to
events that mark the start or the completion of
    an activity
  • Activity-on-Node Representation Arcs are used to
connect two nodes (events) where one node is an
immediate predecessor activity of the second node

3
  • Solving the Network
  • TE The earliest expected completion time for the
event Forward pass through the network
  • TL The latest allowable completion time for the
event Backward pass through the network

4
  • Finding the Critical Path
  • Slack TL - TE
  • Shortening the Project Completion Time
  • Crash cost per week (Crashing cost - normal
    cost)
  • (Crashing time - normal time)

5
Probability Analysis - The role of PERT
  • Manager is interested in having a probability
estimate associated with a particular schedule
completion date. PERT provides for such
probability calculations by assigning three (3)
    time estimates to each activity.
  • Optimistic To
  • Most likely TM
  • Pessimistic Tec
  • For the purpose of determining the critical path,
these three (3) values are averaged to obtain a
    single expected activity time (Et)
  • Et to 4tm tp
