Math Professional Development
  • The Oregon Department of Education is offering
    the opportunity for teachers to attend a
    two-three day training on the new core math
    standards, new diploma requirements, elements of
    effective instruction, best practices in
    mathematics, and much more.

Workshop Sessions
  • First Two Days The first two days will focus on
    how to effectively use the new math standards in
    the classroom.
  • Third Day The third day will be a train the
    trainer session, so participants can implement
    the two day workshop back in their area. Grant
    information will also be shared on the third day.

    high-quality professional development

  • The focus audience is anyone that works with
    students to provide Mathematics instruction
  • K-12 teachers
  • Instructional Assistants

  • ESD Staff

  • Individuals can attend the training
  • Teams are encouraged to attend. Teams will be
    given a priority if the workshop session is full.

  • Teams can be comprised of
  • ESD members
  • Teachers from neighboring districts
  • Teachers from the same district or school
  • Your teams composition is up to you and your
    administrator.

What is the focus of the Math Professional
Development?
  • Participants will receive information on
  • Research-based instructional strategies to
    increase student achievement that can be
    implemented in their classrooms
  • Clear explanation of the new core math standards
    and specific strategies for developing deep
    student thinking and higher cognitive demand
    levels through questioning strategies
  • Analyzing the cognitive demand of a math task to
    encourage deeper student thinking

Participants will
  • Identify Elements of Effective Instruction
  • Practice scoring math problem-solving samples
  • Develop a standards-based classroom unit
  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of their
    mathematics curriculum
  • Develop a problem-solving work sample that aligns
    to their unit of study
  • Interact and collaborate with colleagues
  • Practice and identify hands-on strategies to use
    in their classrooms

Cost of the Workshop
  • Oregon Department of Education will pay for
  • Registration
  • Workshop materials
  • Lunch during the workshop
  • Help offset travel costs by paying for lodging
    and round trip mileage (if you are over 70 miles
    away from your home)

Grant Opportunity
  • Participants will be able to apply for the
    Oregons Professional Development Moving Math
    Education Forward Implementation Grant if
  • They are part of a team
  • At least one member of the team attends the third
    day of the professional development session
  • They submit a complete grant application

Grant fund?
  • The grant will fund
  • Teams to provide additional sessions of the two
    day workshop to teachers back in their district
    or ESD
  • Team Leader to attend support sessions throughout
    the year as follow-up for implementation of these
    workshops
