Example Cover Letter
  • Ms. Gail Leiby Ulrich
  • Director of Human Resources
  • Juniata College
  • Huntingdon, PA 16652
  • November 8, 2000
  • Dear Ms. Ulrich
  • I am writing to apply for the Assistant Professor
of Economics position as advertised in the
  • recent Job Openings in Economics. I am currently
ABD at the University of Connecticut,
  • Storrs, with an expected completion date of
    February, 2001.
  • Based on the information Ive been able to
gather, I think my background fits your needs
  • well. You seem to have only one person, Andrew
    Pienkos, teaching only economics
  • courses, plus James Lakso teaching Industrial
Organization. Given this situation, you need a
  • generalist who can teach a variety of courses
that your ABE program plans to offer. I have
  • extensive teaching experience in numerous fields,
    including
  • Government and Industry
  • The experience of teaching in the IMC program has
    sharpened my knowledge of business
  • disciplines and how they relate to economics. I
have studied economics at the graduate
  • level, and to a lesser extent marketing, finance
and accounting, but their relation to each
  • other didnt truly crystallize until I had to
show how they relate while teaching in the
  • program. Because of these challenges, teaching in
    the IMC curriculum is demanding.
  • IMC1 counts as almost three courses toward a
    faculty members workload and IMC2
  • counts as almost two. Babsons willingness to
hire me to teach in their core curriculum
  • shows their faith in my abilities.
  • While my teaching experience has largely been in
    a business environment, my overall
  • background is firmly rooted in a liberal
arts/social science tradition. My major fields
    are
  • History of Economic Thought and Economic History.
I have co-authored two papers on
  • the economic history of the Shakers. My
dissertation, "Unfair Trade and the Creation of
  • Competitive Advantage England 1660-1763,
focuses on British economic thought and
  • policy during the 17th and 18th centuries and its
impact on British and colonial economic
  • development. In terms of its broader relevance,
it illustrates how strategic trade policy can
  • be used to alter the development of a region or
country. The concepts I develop in my
  • dissertation parallel some of the themes covered
    in your EB381International Political
  • Economy course. It looks like a fascinating
    course, one Id enjoy teaching.
