Title: Lab Expectations

1
Lab Expectations
  • Mr. Benedict

2
Who?
  • Everybody MUST satisfactorily complete the New
York State lab requirement for Living Environment.

3
What?
  • Lab is one class per week.
  • Lab is separate and different from class.

4
Where?
  • Check your schedule to see what room your lab is
    in.
  • You may or may not be in the same room as you
have class. You may or may not have the same
teacher for lab as you have for class.

5
When?
  • Lab is once a week. There are lab sections every
day of the week, from Monday to Friday. Your day
depends on what your schedule says.
  • Lab reports are due once a week. THEY WILL
ALWAYS BE DUE ON MONDAY, REGARDLESS OF THE DAY ON
    WHICH YOU HAVE LAB!!!!!!

6
Why?
  • Hands-on
  • EVERYONE benefits from seeing material presented
    in multiple formats.
  • Science is about experiments, so we are going to
    do some!
  • Ohand New York will not let you take the Regents
Exam if you have not completed the lab
requirement. THIS IS NO JOKE! COMPLETE YOUR
LABS ON TIME AND KEEP GRADED LABS IN YOUR
    PERSONAL LAB FOLDER ONLY!!

7
How are labs graded?
  • Lab grades will be 30 of your grade at any given
    time.
  • UNLESS ANNOUNCED, labs each week should have a
lab report with them (more to come on this).
  • Punctuality is part of your lab grade. Labs
turned in late lose 10 per day. 10 days late?

8
How do I do a lab report?
  • 3 parts
  • 1. Paragraph (5 sentences) summarizing
  • the lab. Should answer the following
  • a. What do you think the purpose was?
  • b. What important concepts did we
  • cover?
  • c. What did you do?
  • TIPS Dont use pronouns, dont need to be very
flowery, does not need to be very long, and cover
    ALL elements a-c.

9
Lab Reports Part II
  • 2. Bulleted LIST of three things that learned
about biology. Be specific. May use pronouns
    here.
  • Bad statement I learned how to use the
    microscope.
  • This doesnt tell me if you learned anything.
  • Good statement I learned that you have to use
fine adjustment when viewing on high power so
neither the slide nor microscope break.
  • This is specific learning!

10
Lab Reports Part III
  • One statement that sums up the conclusions/results
    of the whole experiment.
  • Ex Plants that make the most flowers will be
    most successful.
  • OR
  • The microscope is a critical tool for viewing
tiny objects, but it is important to remember
that it flips the specimen both upside down and
    backwards.
