General KS4 courses
For her project Vanessa researched the different
types of salons that offered nail services in her
locality. She did this partly by visiting them
and collecting their promotional literature and
partly by researching on the internet. The aim
was to find out how the range and type of
services, and their prices, varied according to
the location of the salon and whether the salon
was a hairdressing or beauty salon or a
specialist nails salon. She was particularly
interested to find out what different types of
patterns and styles were used on nails in
different types of salons. She presented her
findings as an annotated display of photographs
of salons, their locations and their typical nail
designs.

For two terms Vanessa was able to spend one
afternoon each week working in a beauty salon.
She was able to experience a wide variety of
tasks including stock-taking and ordering
supplies, dealing with bookings for appointments
and answering the telephone (which sometimes
involved dealing with challenging clients). She
also undertook some simple beauty procedures such
as preparing the rooms/clients and providing
complimentary services to clients such as filing
their nails, whilst they received treatments from
the therapist.
Progression route Vanessa achieved good results
in her Diploma and her GCSEs, but her Diploma
work experience at the beauty salon had given her
a particular interest in nails and she was
delighted to be able to obtain a job as a Trainee
Nail Technician at a newly opened local
specialist nail salon, whilst taking a NVQ in
Nail Services at her local college
