LIGHTING A CANDLE AGAINST
AIDS Minister Gugile Nkwinti lit a candle to
commemorate World AIDS Day and show support for
those that are infected and affected by HIV and
AIDS. It is estimated that 5.2 million people
are living with HIV and AIDS in South Africa more
than any other country in the world. The 1st of
December is International world AIDS Day and the
whole world will focus on the scourge of AIDS and
its impact. Everyone is expected to lend a hand
to those who are infected and affected by this
pandemic. We are the most affected country on the
continent and in the whole world and we carry a
huge burden as a result. This is a major
challenge to the country and its a matter of
urgency and calls for all of us to take
responsibility by getting tested and knowing our
status, said Deputy Minister Dr Joe
Phaahla.

Celebrated since 1988, World AIDS Day is about
increasing awareness of HIV and AIDS through
education and fighting prejudice suffered by
those infected with the disease. This year the
theme is "I am responsible, we are responsible,
and South Africa is taking responsibility". The
theme encourages all South Africans from all
walks of life to take personal and collective
responsibility to stop new HIV infections and
providing care and support to those living with
HIV and to ensure access to treatment by all who
are in need.
