Before the meeting

• Make the invitation letter explicit
• Include reference to the guidance
• Allow the student to see the work and evidence

• Be clear yourself about the nature of the problem
• Try not to prejudge the student
• Allow the student to submit a written statement/
  other evidence they feel might be useful (notes,
  rough workings).

Conducting the meeting

• Remember it is not a disciplinary meeting
• Balance seriousness and formality with the need
  for the student to feel able to talk
• Open questions, to establish what happened from
  the students point of view

• More direct questions to challenge contradictions
  and establish facts
• Be clear to the student about what the evidence
  shows or suggests
• Be clear about next steps

After the meeting the report

• Circulate to all participants for checking
• Make the report anonymous?
• If giving a warning and further advice be
  explicit about this in the report. Where should
  the student go for this?
• Try and give an indication of when the case might
  progress.
