Title: Getting Along With Difficult People

1
Getting Along With Difficult People
  • Conflicts at Work

2
Workplace conflict
  • There are mainly two kinds of workplace
    conflicts
  • When peoples ideas, decisions, or actions
    relating to the job differ.
  • When two people just dont get along.

3
Conflict over Business Ideas, Decisions, or
Actions
  • Stick to the issue. This will encourage the
other person to do the same.
  • Appreciate other peoples opinions as they are
    just as important as yours.
  • Decide to solve the problem rather than win the
    argument. Be prepared to compromise.
  • Understand the other persons point of view.
  • Have others observe the discussion.

4
Getting along with Others
  • Accept that people are different.
  • Convert your negative energy for that person into
    a more productive source.
  • Dont complain about the person to others.
  • Be polite.
  • Not getting along with others is bad for
    business.
  • Work to make your workplace a friendly and
    healthy work environment.

5
Telling the Difference
  • It is important to find out whether the conflict
is caused over a dispute over business ideas and
decisions or people that just dont get along.
Here are some questions to ask to help you
  • Do you feel angry at this person all the time or
just when particular work issues are brought up?
  • If you get angry about their views on
work-related issues, is your anger unreasonable
    or out-of-proportion?
  • Do you respect the other person in any way?

6
Violence at Work
  • Workplace violence is defined as conflict
escalated to the point of threats, insults,
racial abuse, sexual harassment or physical
contact, such as pushing or punching.
  • Under Victorias Occupational Health and Safety
Act of 1985, employers are responsible for
    workplace violence.

7
Avoiding Violence at Work
  • Avoiding violence at work is almost impossible,
but there are many things that you can do to keep
it away from you as much as possible.
  • Stay focused.
  • Stay busy.
  • Be nice.
  • Treat people the way you want to be treated.
