History
  • Program began with a grant from the State in 1991
  • A core group of teachers spent one year
    researching and visiting multi-age classrooms
  • In 1992 the first multi-age classes began with a
    second/third grade structure
  • In 1993 a first/second grade multi-age was
    initiated
  • To date, success with multi-age continues

Philosophy
Teach children at their instructional level -
moving above and beyond grade level when possible
Curriculum is modified to meet various ability
levels, mastering of grade level objectives and
district requirements is the priority
A large concept or content area is taught to all
- groups splinter off from there to take that
concept to its highest potential

What Research Tell Us
  • Interaction between children models the real
    world. Children are exposed to, and work with
    others of different ages and abilities
  • Cooperation rather than competition is the norm
  • Sibling-like relationships develop between the
    students
  • Younger children have mentors to look up to
    and receive guidance from
  • Older children have the opportunity to be
    classroom leaders, teachers, and role models to
    younger children
  • Children learn from one another
  • Independent working skills are strengthened
  • Two year time span with one teacher strengthens
    the relationship between teacher/student -
    teacher/parents
