  • Raw materials and coke are added into a blast
    furnace to create molten iron
  • The steel is made from 70 raw materials and 30
    recycled steel

17
Steel ProductionMolten Iron to Steel Slabs
  • The molten iron is then adjusted to the right
temperature and mixture before it is brought into
    the steel caster
  • The steel caster then pours the molten iron into
    castings to form steel slabs
  • The steel slabs begin to cool as soon as the are
poured they need to be reheated then are run
    through the roughing mill
  • The steel is reduced to about 2 inches from its
original size of about 8.5 inches in the
    roughing mill

18
Steel ProductionFinishing Touches
  • The steel is then hot rolled so it can be shipped
    out
  • Some of the steel moves on to meet the need of
    construction and automobiles
  • Pickling is one process that uses hydrochloric
acid to remove scaling and smooth out the steel
  • The steel can also be galvanized in which a zinc
coat is added to protect against corrosion
