The two main influences, the Portuguese
explorers had on the native population, were the
conversion from the belief in many gods, to
Christianity. Today Latin America is one of the
most heavily populated Christian area. A more
obvious influence on the native people, is of
course the language. Prior to the introduction
of Portuguese explorers, the native people spoke
a variety of languages. Now as a result of
Portuguese imperialism over Brazil, the native
language of Brazil is Portuguese. Brazils
changing and unifying culture eventually led to
Brazil declaring independence from Portugal in
1822.

Brazil's Affect On Portugal
Graphite
Iron Ore
Mineral resources such as quartz, diamonds,
chromium, iron ore, phosphates, petroleum, mica,
graphite, titanium, copper, gold, oil, bauxite,
zinc, tin, and mercury were found in Brazil and
brought to Portugal after they colonized and
controlled Brazil. The other two reasons that
Portugal took over Brazil was to become more of
an imperial country, and to have slaves.

Critical Thinking Questions
  • Imperialism is a takeover of a country or a
territory by a stronger nation with the intent of
domination the political economic, and social
life of the people of that nation. Racism (the
idea that one race is superior to others)was the
    main reason that imperialism spread.
  • Europeans established colonies throughout the
world in places where they could get money,
power, or just to enlarge the countrys empire.
Many places were Asia, Africa, Pacific Islands,
South America, North America, and the Middle
    East.
  • Before Brazil was colonized there were Indian
tribes Just like in Angola and Mozambique. Every
tribe was different such as the language,
culture, and beliefs. Occasionally in South
America, near Brazil, one tribe would grow big
such as the Mayans, Aztecs, or Incas.
  • . The impact of the Portugal colonization made
Mozambique and Brazil similar to the Portuguese
culture. Religion was changed to Christianity,
    and the language became universal.
  • These countries eventually became imperialistic
and Portugal got weaker of the years so Portugal
could not control its colonies and that is what
lead Mozambique and Brazil to independence.
  • If these regions would not have been colonized,
they would not have any of the industrial modern
technology, and the regions would be the exact
same way they were 500 years ago.
  • The most contemporary example of imperialism
today is the Gulf War in 1990. Iraq attacked
Kuwait so they could have more oil and become
    richer.

11
Did imperialism improve the lives of those who
were colonized?
Imperialism made many changes to the regions
that were colonized. Some people think the
changes were bad but I think they were good for
the countries. Many of these countries would
ever be able to communicate with the other people
because there could be thousands of languages in
one small area. It also reduced the chance of a
religious war because everyone in the country
believed in the same thing, (Christianity).
There is no chance that people in Brazil would
have cell phones if Portugal did not
industrialize that country.
