14Kneaded Memory by Dalila Gonçalves (Portugal,
1982) Hand painted ceramic tiles moulded on
cement volumes
Praça de Almeida Garrett
15In the installation Kneaded Memory the
Portuguese visual artist Dalila Gonçalves
presents a series of objects that resemble rocks
and wreckage-shaped forms with different shapes
and sizes. Part of the surfaces of these forms
is covered with ceramic tiles (azulejos), which
were molded to sit perfectly on the irregular and
round surfaces of these forms. In the past
century, there has been an increasing
degradation, destruction and exclusion of the
decorative element in architectural use. Along
with the exclusion of traditional decorative
elements, the past century has also seen
an increase in the usage of cement and concrete
on the façades of most public and private
buildings. Kneaded Memory looks into this
particular relation between past and present,
between memory, remembrance and oblivion

30In Portugal a pillory is called a Pelourinho and
they are monuments of importance, often
classified as national monuments since they can
date back as far as the late Roman period.
Usually, they are located on the main square of
the town, and/or in front of a major church or a
palace
31They are made of stone with a column and carved,
often bearing the coat of arms of a king or queen
as the macabre symbol of justice in old
Portugal. The Pelourinho pillar stands in front
of the Cathedral (Se)

33These charming pillories have a gruesome past and
were used for punishing criminals in a public
place
34The granite Pelourinho in front of the Porto
cathedral is a Baroque masterpiece with a crown
at its soaring top. It was put up in the 1940s
when the cathedral was restored, with the idea of
making the square look as it did in the
18th century so to our knowledge it was never
used
