Why Network?
  • Device Sharing
  • Network Security
  • Resource Sharing
  • Software Sharing
  • Data Integrity and Reliability
  • Better Communication

6
Components of a Network
  • Servers
  • Hubs/switches
  • Workstations
  • Cabling
  • Other Devices

7
Login
Type in you user id, hit tab which will take your
cursor to the password field. Type in your
password, and select OK.
8
Login (cont)
  • A staff user id consists of the last name_first
initial. Example my user id is Andrzejewski_W
  • Student user ids consist of the first four
characters of the students last name, the first
three characters of the first name, followed by a
number, usually number 1. Example a user id for
    Amanda Russell would be russama1.
  • Students in grade K-2 have user ids, but
    passwords are not required.

9
Verify that you are logged in
  • Did a box scroll by when you logged in?
  • Do you have Network Drive Letters, other than
    F\?
  • Do you have all of your desktop icons, especially
    those with red arrow icons?

10
What if Im not logged in?
  • If you do not get all of your desktop icons or
network drives, try restarting your workstation.
Go to Start, Shut Down, and select Restart from
    the drop down menu.
  • If after 1 or 2 restarts, you still are not
connected to the network, contact the Help Desk.

11
What if I forget my password?
  • Contact the Help Desk, and request your password
    be reset.
  • Your password should be at least 5 characters
long, and can be alpha/numeric characters.

12
Directory Structure
  • Standalone workstations have Drive Letters that
point to a specific device. Not all workstations
in the SJPS network have the same devices
    installed.
  • A\ - Floppy Drive
  • B\ - Floppy Drive
  • C\ - Hard Drive or Fixed Disk Drive
  • D\ - CD-ROM or DVD Drive
  • E\ - Other media storage drive

13
Network Directory Structure
  • Networked workstations have Drive Letters
    assigned to specific directories.
  • For Example
  • F\ User home directories
  • G\ Applications
  • I\ Lib directory for students
  • L\ Lib directory for staff

14
Network File Management
  • When you are ready to save a document, you will
want to save it to your home directory on drive
    F\
  • Browse to your home directory.
  • Find the folder you have created in your home
directory where you want to save the document.
  • Name the document, and hit save.

15
Network File Management (cont)
  • Your workstation may be reimaged at any point
throughout the school year. At a minimum it is
reimaged every summer. This means everything is
wiped off, and the base image is reloaded.
    Therefore
  • Never save any documents to the hard drive (C\)
of the workstation. Always save to your home
    directory (F\).
  • If you have installed approved software or
peripherals onto your workstation, it is your
responsibility to reinstall them after a reimage.
  • Your Internet Favorites will be lost during the
reimage process. Save your Favorites to your
home directory frequently, especially before a
    reimage.

16
Network File Management (cont)
  • Think of network file management as a filing
    cabinet.
  • You go to the cabinet (your home directory on
    F\)
  • You open a drawer in the filing cabinet( a
    folder)
  • You place the document in the folder in the
    cabinet.

17
Lib directory
  • The Lib directory (drive I and L) is used to
store documents/files that can be shared by other
    users in the SJPS network.
  • There are many folders created on the Lib
directory. If you can see a folder, you have
access to it, though your rights to it may be
    limited.
  • Some folders may be read only, meaning you can
see what is in the folder, but you do not have
the rights to save documents back to the folder.

18
Printing Basics
  • Local Printing
  • Refers to a printer attached directly to your
    workstation.
  • Network Printing
  • Refers to a printer connected to a network.
  • Network printers usually have a external print
    server box attached to them.

19
Printing Options
  • Default printer
  • Printer you automatically print to. This printer
shows in the Printer Name line of the dialog box.
  • Non-default printer
  • Printer you have been given rights to print to,
but you have to select it from your printers
    list.

20
Printing Options (cont)
  • When you are ready to print
  • Go to FilegtPrint
  • It will automatically select your default
printer, or the printer you most recently used.
  • If you would like to select a different printer,
use the pull down to select the printer of your
    choice.

21
Logout of the Network
  • How to Logout
  • Start gt Log Offgt Log Off
  • When to Logout
  • When you are away from your computer for a
    extended period of time
  • When you Leave the room

22
Logout cont.
  • Why Logout?
  • Failure to logout
  • Leaves your files vulnerable
  • Provides access to unauthorized programs and users

23
Shutting Down
  • How to Shut Down
  • Start gt Shut Down gt
  • Be sure Shut Down is checked gt OK
  • When to Shut Down
  • At the end of the day
  • When asked to do so by building administration or
    Technology staff

24
Network Shut Down
  • In an effort to conserve energy and the life of
the computers, the district has imposed a Power
Off policy. The network automatically shuts down
all workstations in the district at 700PM.
  • If you are in working on your computer at 700PM,
you will receive a message stating that your
computer will shut down in 5 minutes.
  • You have to option of clicking Cancel to continue
    working.
  • The network will attempt to shut down your
workstation every hour, on the hour. You may
click Cancel each time you receive the message to
    continue working.
  • Note the servers perform maintenance routines
at various times throughout the evening and
weekends. This may affect what you are working
    on.

25
Can I install anything on my workstation?
  • Generally, no peripheral devices or software
should be installed on your workstation without
    approval from the technology department.
  • Why?
  • Many devices or software may conflict with
hardware or software already on the workstation.
  • These devices and software may also contain
viruses that may corrupt the workstation.
  • If you have any questions, contact your building
    administrator or the Help Desk.

26
Internet Filtering
  • SJPS uses internet filters.
  • SmartFilter maintained by the MMNET consortium.
  • If something is blocked by SmartFilter, there is
not much we can do to unblock it since it follows
policies and rules set by the consortium.
