3
Oedipus (entrance)
  • He came to the people when they were in need.
  • He solved the riddle of the Sphinx.
  • He entered into the position of King suddenly.

4
Creon(entrance)
  • Oedipus was worried that Creon hadnt returned
and it was like he wished him there. It was
    sudden.
  • Creon came in and was willing to talk to him in
    the presence of the people
  • He has news of what should be done about the
    plague.
  • The discussion suddenly turns to the subject of
    the former king.

5
Tiresias
  • It seems the blind seer enters at the command of
    Oedipus.
  • He brings news, but refuses to tell and suddenly
    wants to leave
  • Oedipus demands he tell him and an argument
    suddenly arises
  • Oedipus turns from angry to enraged

6
Jocasta(entrance)
  • Jocasta is the only woman in the play
  • Jocasta seems to enter at just the right moment
  • She is always there to calm Oedipus and be the
voice of reason when Oedipus is angry.

7
Creon (exit)
  • Creon leaves the scene after being accused of
    conspiracy against Oedipus.
  • Then he suddenly returns to stand by Oedipus in
    his moment of despair.
  • It is ironic that Oedipus was afraid that Creon
would take over his throne and in the end he
    does.

8
Jocastas (exit)
  • Jocasta was by Oedipus through the tragedy. She
was there to help him when he needed it.
  • Then she suddenly realizes the sin she had been
    in.
  • She suddenly leaves the scene and a messenger is
sent to tell of her sudden suicide.

9
Oedipus (exit)
  • Oedipus suddenly wants to kill Jocasta in a rage
of hatred for what she had done to him as a baby.
  • He then suddenly finds she has taken her own
    life.
  • Filled with hatred at his own sin he removes the
pins from her dress and gouges out his eyes so he
no longer has to look upon such evil.

10
The Conclusion
  • The entrances and exits are sudden and it seems
just at the right time of the play to make the
    downfall of Oedipus worse.
  • They enter with good news that suddenly turns bad.

11
  • They leave in sudden rage or fear or realization
of what was, has been, or will be.
  • Sophocles also used a third actor and the
characters had to be quick in their appearances
to allow time for the other characters to perform
    as well.
