Improving Conditions for Children.
  • Children had many jobs in the late 1800s.
  • Boy sold newspapers shined shoes girls cooked
    or cleaned for boarders staying with their
    families.
  • In 1916 and 1919 Congress passed federal child
    labor laws.
  • These laws banned products made with child labor
    from being shipped from one state to another.

    and early 1900s.
  • In 1900 over 35,000 people were killed in about
    500,000 suffered from injuries.
  • In 1902, Maryland became the first state to pass
    a worker compensation law.
  • However new laws were not always enforced.
  • Labor unions were a strong force for improving
    working conditions.
