CDFG Sea Surveys

• Conducted annually by the California Department
  of Fish and Game (CDFG), from 1950 to 1989, from
  northern California to southern Baja California.
• Survey Purpose study the abundance,
  distribution, and biological condition of
  juvenile and adult sardine, anchovy, and mackerel
  in the California Current System (CCS).
• In addition to biological data, environmental
  data were collected, such as SST and
  bathythermograph casts.
• The completed Sea Survey time series
  synchronize both temporarily and spatially with
  standard CalCOFI surveys the longest running
  large-scale interdisciplinary ocean observing
  system in existence.
• With the data readily available, scientists will
  be able to understand individual populations in
  the context of their ecosystem as a whole.

Task Objective

• To key-enter hard copy data collected during Sea
  Survey cruises from 1950 to 1967.
• Data will be merged with an existing Microsoft
  Access database (1968 to 1989), completing the
  recovery of the Sea Survey series 1950 to 1989.
• With CDMPs technology services in information
  and database development, it will be feasible for
  us to modernize and expand scope of the current
  database so users can visualize data through the
  web in addition to retrieving raw data for
  specific applications (future CDMP project).

Brief Task Description

• Source Data consist of hard copy Data Reports
  (Vol. 1-17) encompassing 18 years and 132
  cruises, contained in 1,046 documents (pages).
• No advanced preparation will be required on the
  part of NOAA Fisheries Service.
• CDMP contractors will use the double-key-verify
  method to enter the data from each document.
• Keying formats will be provided for each table
  type.
• Output from each document can be text or Excel
  format.
