Purpose

• To help children of commercial sex workers,
  rehabilitate them and provide them with
  opportunities.
• Founded in conjunction with Madras School of
  Social Work in Chennai in 1996

Problem

• Thirteen children of sex workers supported by TRY
  were facing instability in their lives due to
  changing rental homes. From 1996-2006, they were
  made to shift six times. The need for a permanent
  home was acute to stabilize the lives of children
  who have already been in traumatic situations.
  The childrens education was getting affected by
  the constant movement.

Asha Solution

• WAH 2004 proposal was approved to construct a
  permanent home with a capacity for 50 children at
  a cost of 30K.
• TRY has received only 22,326 so far (Owing to
  short fall in WAH fund raising). The first floor
  of the TRY home is nearing completion. Tentative
  completion date is 15th August 2006 which is
  delayed from the original schedule due to various
  reasons.

• Permanent Home ConstructedA permanent home for
  children of sex workers nearing completion.
  Allows scaling of TRY rehabilitation work from 13
  children to more than 50 in the near future.

• 2. Behaviour change in traumatized children
  realized
• Children that are exposed sex and drugs. With
  early intervention of TRY, children from such
  backgrounds are responding very well - Ramesh
  (10th grade) is scoring first rank Senthil,
  Kalyani, Kavita are scoring within top 5 ranks in
  the Perungalathur govt high school.

Achievements through TRY- Asha Cooperation

• TRY volunteers are gaining India-wide exposure
  through Asha, with their knowledge growing about
  experiences in other parts of India (eg. Tomorrow
  Foundation, Kolkata Odanadi, Karnataka) and
  becoming better prepared towards systematic long
  term solutions.

Challenges faced by TRY in 2005

• First installment of 10K reached TRY 5 months
  late
• Cost of construction materials went up owing to
  boom in the Indian economy.
• While 30K was approved through WAH 2004, only
  22326 has reached TRY so far falling short of
  the target
• Recent heavy flooding in Chennai has affected
  some parts of sump construction requiring rework.
• TRY operating expenses for 2005 were not
  available owing to funds from typical donors
  being diverted to tsunami.

Needs of TRY for the year 2006

• 6535 needed to finish plastering, plumbing,
  flooring and electrical work
• 6767 needed for operating expenses for one year
  (i.e. 564 per month)
• Renewal of Asha Honor Academy Fellowship 1st
  April 2006- 30th March 2007 needed 2400
  (Requested from Asha Yale).
