Title: UNO R
1UNO RD and mUNO Possible early use of Henderson
Upper Campus
- UNO collaboration has submitted an RD proposal
covering - Excavation RD of large caverns
- Cavity Liner RD, develop water containing
liners - PMT RD, design and prototype PMT mounting
supports - mUNO small scale test water Cherenkov
detector, outreach - Photosensor Development
- Software monte carlo studies
These items require tests in a mining environment.

the walls and floor to contain the water volume

4Cavity Liner Tests mUNO
The cavity liner tests require a liner to be
installed in a cavern or cistern of very
rough dimensions, 3x3x3m deep, and to be filled
with water to check the containment. This has
been proposed for the Henderson Mine. preliminary
estimates of excavation, 45K. This allows the
opportunity to set up a small PMT array to be
readout. This forms a mUNO detector.

5Cavity Liner Tests mUNO
- The purpose of this test includes
- tests of the cavity liner and may include PMT
mounting schemes - Experience in building operating an UNO like
detector at - Henderson.
- Includes end to end shakedown of a real detector
at Henderson - with a DAQ system that is remotely readout and
controlled. - Enables Physicists to learn to work in Henderson
mining environment - Enables Miners to experience Physicists in a
mining environment
6mUNO Outreach
- mUNO provides an opportunity for hands
experience for HS students - to participate in a complete mini-experiment.
- In 2001 HS students in the region have
participated in Snowmass Area - Large Time-coincidence Array (SALTA) and have
experience with PMT - detectors readout at their schools using QUARKNET
cards. In 2004, - SALTA schools participated in measuring cosmic
ray rates in Henderson. - (see Dan Claes presentation)
- mUNO participation forms excellent next step
progression of outreach. - Training workshops would be set up at Henderson
and select students - could participate in some testing, setup and
routine operation. The - readout could be web based providing events
displays of cosmic rays - in real time that are accessed by many schools
around the state.
7Upper Campus Ideas
- UNO RD proposal is a two year plan, with the
1st year test cistern - construction at the Colorado School of Mines and
in the 2nd year - construction of two test cisterns at Henderson
including building the mUNO. - Current plans are to use existing cavern space
provided by Henderson. - UNO RD project could provide an excellent first
use of the - DUSEL/Henderson upper campus section if
available.
