AACN Update 2006-07
3
AACNs Mission Building on decades of clinical
excellence, the American Association of
Critical-Care Nurses provides and inspires
leadership to establish work and care
environments that are respectful, healing and
humane. The key to AACNs success is through its
members. Therefore, AACN is committed to
providing the highest quality resources to
maximize nurses contribution to caring and
improving the healthcare of acutely and
critically ill patients and their families.
4
GOALensure high-quality education and
evidence-based practice resources that meet the
needs of critical care nurses - both at a
generalist level and for specific specialties
such as cardiac, progressive care and advanced
practice
5
GOAL ensure high-quality education and
evidence-based practice resources that meet the
needs of critical care nurses
Current strategies include
Expand e-learning resources to better meet the
just-in-time learning needs of nurses in busy
hospital settings
AACNs Essentials of Critical Care Orientation
program has been well received and has
accomplished the goals of standardizing orientatio
n content, allowing orientees to enter into the
organization at any time and learn at the best
pace for them. This frees clinical educators to
mentor new nurses at the bedside rather
than having to be in the classroom teaching basic
content.
The basic ECG module was a high priority for
members on needs assessment surveys.
An e-learning orientation program for nurse
managers is under development in partnership with
AONE. This program is scheduled to launch in
early 2007.
6
GOAL ensure high-quality education and
evidence-based practice resources that meet the
needs of critical care nurses
Current strategies include
Continue to enhance and improve the NTI to ensure
that it provides leading-edge education and a
forum for rejuvenation, inspiration, dialogue,
networking and problem-solving.
At NTI 2006, more than 6,700 nurses came together
to learn and network.
Messages around Debbie Brinkers theme, Engage
and Transform, inspired not only NTI attendees,
but also countless nurses across the nation
throughout the year.
The API continues to be a strong component of the
NTI, with content guided by AACNs Advanced
Practice Work Group.
NTI 2007 is in Atlanta, Ga., May 19-24. Guided by
the associations strategic plan, the NTI Work
Group diligently reviews hundreds of speaker
abstracts to put together a strong
educational program.
7
GOAL ensure high-quality education and
evidence-based practice resources that meet the
needs of critical care nurses
Current strategies include
The AACN Beacon Award for Critical Care
Excellence continues to expand. AACN has always
been about excellence in practice and practice
environments, and this initiative is an important
strategy to support units along their journey to
excellence.
8
GOAL ensure high-quality education and
evidence-based practice resources that meet the
needs of critical care nurses
Current strategies include
Through the efforts of the Research Work Group,
AACN continues to develop and promote Practice
Alerts. Survey data show that the Practice Alerts
are well-used, and changes in practice are
occurring.
9
GOAL ensure high-quality education and
evidence-based practice resources that meet the
needs of critical care nurses
Current strategies include
AACN Clinical Issues was relaunched as AACN
Advanced Critical Care, with a broader scope and
multi-topic focus. AACN members enjoy a
substantial discount on subscriptions (35
compared to 88 for nonmembers).
10
GOALimplement strategies to boldly promote
vital strategic platforms and issues to influence
critical care nursing, the environments in which
it is practiced and the care of patients and
their families
11
GOAL implement strategies to boldly promote
vital strategic platforms and issues
Key strategies include
AACN Standards for Establishing and Sustaining
Healthy Work Environments. There have been more
than 125,000 downloads of the standards and
Silence Kills research. AACN is working with
multiple partners to create educational
resources, including Joint Commission Resources,
the education arm of JCAHO. An online center
will better accommodate the growing interest in
and requests for speakers to talk about
the standards.
12
GOAL implement strategies to boldly promote
vital strategic platforms and issues
Key strategies include
A second work group comprised of nurse leaders
who have successfully implemented the standards
has been convened to engage other nurse leaders
in implementation.
13
GOAL implement strategies to boldly promote
vital strategic platforms and issues
Key strategies include
Another top voice priority is optimal palliative
and end-of- life care. A tool kit to accompany
the 4 A's to Rise Above Moral Distress Framework
publication is available online. The Robert Wood
Johnson Foundations Promoting Excellence at the
End-of-Life materials are now hosted on the AACN
Web site. Under development are a position
statement and an online resource to ensure that
nurses have access to the latest information
regarding palliative and end-of-life care.
14
GOALcontinuing certifications validating that
acute and critical care nurses meet a national
standard relative to knowledge, skills and
abilities in caring for critically ill patients
15
GOAL continuing certifications validating that
acute and critical care nurses meet a national
standard
The number of nurses achieving the PCCN
credential is growing, confirming that the acuity
of patients cared for in progressive care units
is on the continuum of critical illness. To
support nurses to become certified in this
area, the association provides a review course
that is now available on DVD.
16
GOAL continuing certifications validating that
acute and critical care nurses meet a national
standard
Development of subspecialty certification exams
CMC and CSC was another key initiative in
response to member feedback about the increasing
specialization in their practice and the
importance of validating this knowledge against a
national standard. A review course is available
to help nurses prepare to take the exam.
17
GOAL continuing certifications validating that
acute and critical care nurses meet a national
standard
The new certification exam for acute care
nurse practitioners (ACNPC) will be launched in
the first half of 2007.
18
GOAL continuing certifications validating that
acute and critical care nurses meet a national
standard
A study of the practice of nurses working in the
new and growing virtual ICUs is also being
conducted, so that an appropriate standard of
care can be established and certification/recertif
ication for nurses working in these units can be
defined.
19
GOALdevelop and effectively manage financial
resources to ensure health and progress of the
organization.
20
GOAL develop and effectively manage financial
resources
Because of our financial health, AACN is able to
launch and sustain our voice issues, develop new
education Resources, such as e-learning programs,
to meet the Changing needs of members and
constituents, and offer news ways of delivering
education resources.
