MODIFIED ASPHALT
18
UNIFORMITY OF MODIFIED ASPHALTS
  • The statement has been made that you must keep
the modified asphalt hot so that the polymer does
    not come out of solution.
  • THIS STATEMENT IS FALSE!

19
UNIFORMITY OF MODIFIED ASPHALTS
  • If you are concerned about the homogenialty of
the modified asphalt, ask your supplier.
  • The supplier should guarntee the uniformity.
  • You should ask to see the suppliers data on this
    issue.

20
UNIFORMITY OF MODIFIED ASPHALTS
  • The main reason is that all suppliers make their
    modified asphalts differently.
  • The supplier uses the modified that works with
their unique asphalt. Suppliers use different
crudes and different processes to make the
    asphalt.

21
TANKS
  • All storage tanks should have a way of mixing the
    product.
  • The recommended method is by a mixer.
  • The other method is to circulate the tank from
    top to bottom.

23
STORAGE
24
SHORT TERM STORAGE
  • Short term storage would be anything less than a
    week.
  • For conventional asphalts, the general
    recommended temperature range for short-term
    storage is 270 - 300F (132 - 149C). You must
check with your supplier for actual temperature
    range.

25
SHORT TERM STORAGE
  • For modified asphalts, the general recommended
temperature range for short-term storage is 300 -
    360 F (149 -182C). You must check with your
    supplier for actual temperature range.

26
LONG TERM STORAGE
  • Long term storage is defined as three (3) week
    maximum.
  • For conventional asphalts, the general
    recommended temperature range for long-term
    storage is 230 - 290 F (110 -143 C). You must
check with your supplier for actual temperature
    range.

27
LONG TERM STORAGE
  • For modified asphalts, the general recommended
temperature range for long-term storage is 250 -
    300 F (122-149 C). You must check with your
    supplier for actual temperature range.

28
EXTEND STORAGE
  • Extended storage will be defined as anything over
    three (3) weeks.
  • Allow all asphalts (conventional and modified)
to go cold. No heat is recommended. You must
check with your supplier on recommendations for
reheating the product. Slow heating is generally
    the rule.

SAMPLING
31
SAMPLING OF ASPHALTS
  • The sampling of asphalt should be done according
to AASHTO M156, which is identical to ASTM D955
    except for one paragraph.
  • Both methods describe a sampling tap and valve.
  • Enough asphalt must be discharged to displace the
asphalt in the line, generally this is a minimum
    of 4 gallons of product.

32
SAMPLING VALVE
33
SAMPLING OF ASPHALTS
  • Correct sampling containers is very important.
  • Only clean, dry cans should be used for asphalt
    samples.
  • Cans should be seamless with no soldered filing
    inside the can.
  • No recycled or reused cans are acceptable.

34
SAMPLING CONTAINERS
35
DONT OF SAMPLING
  • Dont use any kind of solvent, grease, or diesel
on the sample valve or on the outside of the can.
It may be cheap and fast. You will pay for it, in
out of specification product when it is tested.
  • Dont use a hose for sampling. If a hose is used,
    you should consider it disposable.

CHANGING GRADES
43
CHANGING GRADES
  • Everyone is going to change grades of asphalt in
    their tank at some point.
  • There is almost always going to be a heel in the
    tank of the last product.
  • How does that effect the next grade?

44
CHANGING GRADES
  • Going from a softer grade to a harder grade
  • Example PG52-28 in the tank and going to use
    PG64-28

45
CHANGING GRADES
  • Did you clean your tank first?
  • How much of a heel do you have in your tank?
  • Say you have a 10000 gallon tank with the pump
suction at 24 inches from the bottom. You would
have around 1800 gallons retain. This is an 18
    heel in the tank.
