Alice Neel

• Born in 1900, Alice Neel worked as a figurative
  painter during the decades of WPA realism,
  postwar abstract expressionism, and 1970s
  minimalism.
• Neel disliked being called a portraitist, but
  rather labeled herself as a "collector of souls."
  She believed that each person has an identity, an
  essential core of personality, and it was this
  that she sought to reveal in her paintings.
• Alice Neel studied at the Philadelphia School of
  Design for Women, now the Moore College of Art.
• Much of Neels work came from not wishing to
  paint a stereotype, but the real emotion of the
  subject. Many of her works were destroyed due to
  her turbulent life, which many say was
  continually brought out in her paintings.

Lucian Freud

• German-born British Painter, born in 1922
• Grandson of Sigmund Freud
• Influenced by the work and friendship of Francis
  Bacon
• Freuds work shows the figure in Expressionistic
  poses without regard to conventional beauty, but
  with emphasis on the dirty sensuality.
• Normally I underplay facial expression when
  painting the figure, because I want expression to
  emerge through the body. I used to do only heads,
  but came to feel that I relied too much on the
  face. I want the head, as it were, to be more
  like another limb.
