Title: Milk Lab

1
Milk Lab
  • What does milk, food coloring, and soap have in
    common?

2
Part 1
  • In this lab, you will be observing and
    investigation
  • the interaction of detergent with a mixture of
    milk
  • and food coloring. Follow the directions below
  • Pour skim milk into a Petri dish until it is
    approximately ½ cm deep.
  • Gently place three drops of food coloring into
the Petri dish so that they make the points of a
triangle. Each drop of food coloring should be a
    different color.

3
Observations
  • What do you see? Write down your observations of
what happens in the Petri dish on your notebook
    paper under Part 1 Observations.
  • Name
  • Block
  • Milk Lab Date
  • Part 1
  • Observations

4
Dish soap time
  • Be ready to write observations as soon as you
    drop the soap!
  • Using dropper, place on drop of hand detergent
into the exact middle of the Petri dish.

Dish Soap
5
Observations
  • Write down your observations of what happens in
the Petri dish after you add the detergent. You
should observe the dish for about five minutes
and write down anything you see on your notebook
    paper under Part 1 Observations.
  • Give DETAILED observations!!!!
  • Part 1
  • Observations
  • (what happened after the 3 drops of food
    coloring)
  • (what happened after the drop of detergent)

6
Clean UP
  • Dump petri dish contents into 600 mL beaker,
bring petri dish, 600 mL beaker and 60 mL beaker
    to sink.
  • Dump all liquids into the sink, rinse petri dish
and both beakers, lay upside down on towels.
  • Return to your group

7
Part 2
  • The next step is to investigate what happens when
you make one change to the experiment.
  • Begin brainstorming what you want to change as a
    group.
  • Milk type (whole, skim, lactaid)
  • Soap Type (antibacterial hand instead of dish)

8
  • Part 1
  • Observations (BE DETAILED!!!) What did you see
with milk and three dots of food coloring. What
did you see when you added soap.
  • Part 2
  • Purpose What do you want to find out?
  • Hypothesis If thenbecause
  • Variables and Constants Identify the
    independent, dependent and any
  • constants for your experiment.
  • Materials What will you need to perform the
    experiment?
  • Procedure What are you going to do? Step by
    step instructions.
  • Have Mrs. Blundell Check Paper and if good obtain
    materials needed

9
Clean UP
  • Return all materials to lab area.
  • All used petri dishes and beakers must be dumped,
rinsed and placed upside down on towels on
    counter
  • All other materials are to be returned to lab
    counter.

10
Here are some suggestions for things that you
might want to change in this procedure. These
are only suggestions! If you have a more
interesting idea, please feel free to try it
  • Change the fat content of the milk (2, whole
    milk, cream)
  • Change the amount of milk in each dish
  • Change the color of the food coloring
  • Change the soap
  • Anything else you can think of
  • (check if we have the materials to try it)
