How We Ended Up In Baseball

Field of Dreams

• Ray, people will come, Ray. Theyll come to
  Iowa for reasons they cant even fathom. Theyll
  turn up your driveway not knowing for sure why
  theyre doing it. Theyll arrive at your door as
  innocent as children longing for the past. Of
  course, we wont mind if you look around,
  youll say. Then theyll walk out to the
  bleachers and sit in their shirts sleeves on a
  perfect afternoon. Theyll find they have
  reserved seats somewhere along one of the
  baselines where they sat when they were children,
  and cheered their heroes and theyll watch the
  game and it will be as if they dipped themselves
  in magic waters. The memories will be so thick
  that theyll have to brush them away from their
  faces. People will come, Ray. The one constant
  through all the years, Ray, has been baseball.
  America has rolled by like an army of
  steamrollers its been erased like a blackboard,
  rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has
  marked the time. This field, this game, is a
  part of our past, Ray. It reminds us of all that
  once was good and could be again. Oh, people
  will come, Ray, people will most definitely
  come.

Captains Reading Program

• The Captains are excited to provide elementary
  and middle school teachers and students the
  opportunity to become part of this reading
  incentive program for traditional and
  non-traditional K-8 schools.
• Each participating classroom was furnished with
• Captains Reading Program poster, activity sheets,
  bookmarks, and folders

• Upon completion of the program, students and
  teachers were rewarded with a complimentary
  ticket, t-shirt, and snack at a Lake County
  Captains home game.

The 2006 Reading Program

• Captains Reading Program participants come from
  Lake, Geauga, Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, and Lorain
  Counties.
• Reading just 30 minutes each, the Captains
  Reading Program participants will have read a
  combined 1,140,000 minutes in 2006 that adds up
  to over two years!

• 38,079 Students
• 2174 Teachers
• 121 Schools

Captains Academic All-Stars

• Program designed to reward high school students
  for perfect attendance or good academic standing
• Each student receives a free ticket to a Captains
  game
• 21 schools participating in 2006, including
  Eastlake North, Willoughby South, Cleveland
  Central Catholic, Lake Catholic and NDCL

Captains Charities, Inc.

• Captains Charities, Inc. is a non-profit
  organization affiliated with the Lake County
  Captains that financially supports various
  charity groups in the Northeast Ohio area.
• Have made grants to Services for Independent
  Living, LifeBanc, Cleveland Baseball Federation,
  The Lake County Church Network, Lake Metroparks
  Special Olympics and the Deepwood Foundation
• Finances accumulated and distributed by the
  Charities come from a variety of events and
  programs organized by the Captains.

Captains Charities Events

• Lake Hospital 5K Race
• Event included a 5K run and 1 mile Skipper Trot
  with all proceeds going to Captains Charities
• Held on May 6th at Classic Park with 420 runners
  and walkers participating

• Hot Stove Dinner
• The Captains 2006 Hot Stove Dinner gave fans the
  opportunity to meet and greet the NEW 2006
  Captains manager as well as welcome back some
  familiar faces from past Captains teams.
• 3rd Annual Garage Sale
• This past season, the event raised over 1,800.

  Northeast Ohio speaking at Rotary Club meetings,
  retirement homes, chamber of commerce functions,
  career fairs, and business expos.

  for various types of benefits, fundraisers and

• In 2006, the Captains donated over 30,000.00 in
  ticket certificates and souvenirs.

Captains Milestone 1,000,000th Fan

• On June 5th, 2005, the Captains welcomed their
  1,000,000th fan through the gates of Classic Park
• Achieved the milestone in under 2 ½ years
• Rich Zieglar, an Eastlake resident, was presented
  with a jersey, four season tickets, and threw out
  the ceremonial first pitch

Captains Milestone Fausto Carmona at the Jake

• On April 15th, 2003 SAL Pitcher of the Year and
  Captains alum Fausto Carmona made his ML debut
  for the Indians and became the first Captain to
  play for the Indians

That was just the beginning!

• Pitchers Juan Lara, Ed Mujica, and Rafael Perez
  made their debuts as well.
• HISTORY was made when Kevin Kouzmanoff became the
  first player in MLB history to hit a grand slam
  HR on the first pitch he saw!

2006 Season Where every fan is an All-Star!

• 2006 S.A.L. All-Star Game
• Classic Park hosted the league All-Star
  festivities on June 20, 2006
• 7,017 fans attended the All Star game
• Events included a Home-Run Derby
• Fans watched batting practice and had player
  autograph sessions
• Post-game fireworks
• Other events included a golf tournament, Indians
  game and All-Star luncheon
