11Mentoring - A Meaningful Relationship
Mentoring is when one person (the mentor) helps
another (the mentee) to transform their
knowledge, work or overall thinking. This
happens in one-to-one meetings at which the
mentor invites the mentee to talk and the mentor
asks relevant searching non-threatening questions
to allow the mentee to discover the answers for
themselves.
12Mentoring what it is and isnt
- Nothing to do with failure
- It is a process that focuses specifically on
providing guidance, direction and advice. - Supported learning, through sharing knowledge and
expertise. A fresh pair of eyes - It is not supervisory or about monitoring
performance
13What makes a good mentor?
14Benefits to the mentee
- Advice and support to the complex and important
role of councillors - Tailored development, information and expertise
- Enables new perspectives and provides challenge
- Addresses negative behaviours
- Raises effectiveness by developing skills and
knowledge - Enhancing mentoring skills of councillors

15Benefits for the mentor
- Self-improvement through helping others
- Sharing a learning and development experience
which also extends and enhances the skills and
knowledge of the mentor - Personal satisfaction and sense of achievement
- Self-esteem-knowing that someone trusts and
respects you
