- The person does not consciously think of himself
or herself as White - The person frequently discovers that other
racial groups exist - The persons interactions with ALANAs are
characterized by naivete and curiosity - The person minimizes or is unaware of racial
differences in the ways that people are treated
6DisintegrationRescue Me
- Schema Disorientation and anxiety provoked by
racial moral dilemmas, self-perceived lack of
race-related social skills, helplessness and
confusion
7DisintegrationWhen a person is using a
disintegration schema
- The person is aware that one can be kicked out of
the White group for improper race-related
behavior - The person is aware that her or his Whiteness has
value - The person is lost in the moral dilemmas of
race and race relations

- The person feels anxious and guilt-ridden when
race is a concern - The person is consciously aware that being White
means having more privileges

- Schema Idealization of the white group,
denigration of other groups (especially people of

reintegration schema
- Believes that he or she is innately better than
ALANAs because he or she is White - Holds exaggerated positive stereotypes of Whites
(like oneself) and exaggerated negative
stereotypes of ALANAs - Directs anger and hostility toward ALANAs and
other people of color because they are not White
11ReintegrationWhen a person is using the
reintegration schema
- Denies the existence of racism in any form
- Uses her or his form of being White to define the
standard of what is good, moral, and socially
desirable
12Pseudo IndependenceWhite Liberal
- Schema Intellectualized commitment to the White
group, rational tolerance of ALANAs,
maternalistic or paternalistic orientation toward
People of Color
13Pseudo Independence When a person is using this
schema, the person
- Can articulate principles of racial fairness, but
not live by them - Believes that Whites and White culture are best,
but ALANAs can be helped to reach the higher
standards - Feels a responsibility for helping ALANAs become
more similar to Whites
14Pseudo Independence When a person is using this
schema, the person
- Uses oneself as the standard toward which ALANAs
should aspire - Depends on ALANAs (especially Blacks) to reveal
whether or not he or she is racist - Assumes that ALANAs (especially Blacks) are the
experts on racism
15Immersion-Emersion Caped Crusader
- Schema Emotional search for understanding of
racism on a personal level, redefinition of
Whiteness, attempted re-education of other Whites
16Immersion-Emersion When a person is using this
schema
- Assumes personal responsibility for racism
- Notices both positive and negative components
- Thinks he or she is more knowledgeable about
racial matters than most White people
17Immersion-Emersion When a person is using this
schema
- Is searching for a non-racist self-definition of
Whiteness - Attempts to re-educate other White people
18AutonomyHumanist
- Schema Informed positive commitment to the White
group, use of internal self-definitional
standards, willingness to relinquish ones own
privileges of racism capacity to view
race-related situations from many perspectives
19AutonomyWhen a person is using this schema, the
person
- Accepts his or her membership in the White group
- Has a personally meaningful non-racist standard
on Whiteness - Is continually nurturing and re-examining his or
her standard of Whiteness
20AutonomyWhen a person is using this schema, the
person
- Values diversity including his or her own
- Does not depend on ALANAs to validate their
non-racist status - Understands that internalizing a non-racist
identity is an ongoing process
