How the Brain Works
  • When the brain is young, its cells grow at the
rate of thousands per second. These cells store
new information and skills and form new
    connections to each other.
  • Many of these new connections result in the
development of neural networks that help the
child have success throughout his whole entire
life. However, sometimes these connections go
wrong and set the stage for a lifetime of
    problems.

6
The development of the human cortex is
characterized by an increase in the number of
connections. Although individual cells can be
readily seen in the newborn cortex, by two years
the neurons are hare to discern in a dense
network of connections. From J.L. Conel, The
Post-Natal Development of the Human Cerebral
Cortex, Vol.1. Harvard University Press.

Characteristics of LD Students
  • Are often disorganized and frustrated in new
    learning
  • Have difficulty with structuring time
  • Have trouble following instructions
  • Are easily distracted
  • Display poor social judgment
  • Have trouble taking notes and paper and pencil
    tasks
  • Do not understand the connection of effort and
    success

Tips
  • Give outline of material. Kids can either copy
or listen, NOT, both at the same time.
  • Allow students to use a variety of colors when
    taking notes.
  • Use white boards to include students in
instruction. You can use a plastic plate with
    wipeable crayons or whiteboard markers.

13
Teach to Many Intelligences
  • Verbal Linguistic (words)
  • Logical Mathematical ( reasoning)
  • Visual Spatial (images)
  • Bodily Kinesthetic (motion and sensations)
  • Musical Rhythmic (rhythms and melodies)
  • Interpersonal (others)

14
  • Intrapersonal (reflective thinking)
  • Naturalist (nature)
  • The more modalities by which you enter the
brain, the greater the chance that learning will
    stick.

15
Differentiating
  • Verbal linguistic
  • TV show for history
  • Debate current issues
  • Teach the class

  • Create raps
  • Make up sounds for math operations
  • Write a song that explains

16

Strategies for Working with Students with LD
  • Note taking help
  • Graphic organizers
  • Planning
  • Hands on tasks
  • Kinesthetic activities
  • Real world activities

25
Projects and Reports
  • Create a model for reports and projects
  • Get a manila folder, 6 envelopes, and 24 3x5 note
    cards for each student
  • Open the folder and glue 3 envelopes on each side
    (glue with flaps out)
  • Write the numbers 4,3,2,1 on each envelope
  • Label the topics of the report or project beside
each envelop, for example (habitat, food,
    enemies, description, interesting facts,
    bibliography)

26
  • As research is completed, put the cards in the
    appropriate envelopes
  • Cross off a number as each card is added
    (4,3,2,1)
  • For older students, use 2 manila folders, 6
    envelopes, and 48 cards

27
