- Background
- The Advanced Internet between Japan and Korea
- Special curriculum for freshmen in Kyushu
University - DVTS
- Teleconference tool
- Case study
- International experience using DVTS
- Outline Comment
- Conclusion
3Background - KJCN -
- KJCN (Korea-Japan Cable Network)
- Submarine optical cable between Fukuoka, Japan
and Busan, Korea - Kyushu Univ. plays a central role about high
speed network between Japan and Korea.
Busan
KJCN (250km)
Kitakyushu
Fukuoka
Kyushu Univ. has various cooperation with Korean
researchers about the internet technology.
4Background - Research Institute -
- Genkai/Hyunhae project
- Proposes to develop the next Internet between
Japan and Korea for research and education - QGPOP (Kyushu GigaPOP project)
- The research project about next generation
network mainly focused on northern part of Kyushu - KOREN (KOrea Advanced Research Network)
- One of the biggest network for research in Korea
5Background - QGPOP KOREN -
6Background - Remote Educations -
- One of research topics in Genkai/Hyunhae project
is Remote Educations. - Remote Lecture
- Remote Medical Education
Junior High School students in Japan made
cultural exchange with Korean People via KJCN.
KJCN and Genkai/Hyunhae project enabled
telesurgical conference between Kyushu Univ.
Hospital and National Cancer Center of Korea.
7Background - Special Curriculum for Freshmen -
- There is a special curriculum for 1st grade
freshmen in Kyushu Univ. - An exploratory class in Department of Electrical
Engineering Computer Science - Couple of freshmen as a rule is assigned to each
laboratory and research about the topic of
laboratory. - The theme of class is to train their research
activity. - Research and investigate for solution toward the
subject given by professor of each laboratory - Make a presentation about the results of their
research
8Background - Teleconference held by Amateurs -
- We have the opportunity to use advanced
applications based on high speed Internet. - Most experiments of advanced applications were
held by professional such as professor.
We thought the consideration for demonstration by
amateur was very interesting.
We performed demonstration experiment about
remote lecture with a minimum equipment.
9Background - International Teleconference -
- International exchange
- Two Way Communication
- Video Audio
- NetMeeting is not enough.
- Streaming Technology has a fatal problem on time
delay. - Almost teleconference systems are expensive.
- DVTS (Digital Video Transport System)
- Freeware
- http//www.sfc.wide.ad.jp/DVTS/
- We used commercial DVTS.
10DVTS - DVTS Outline -
- DVTS is an application for sending and receiving
DV (Digital Video) streams using the Internet.
11DVTS - DVcommXP Comet DVIP -
- Our laboratory usually uses two kinds of DVTS as
an advanced remote communication tool. - DVcommXP (Software system)
- http//www.fatware.jp/
- needs high-spec PC
- 700MHz Pentium 4 CPU , 128M memory must be needed
- use both IPv4 and IPv6
- Comet DVIP (Hardware system)
- http//www.comet-can.jp/
- 4pin IEEE1394 (2)
- 100Base-TX RJ45 (1)
- Only use IPv4

14Case study - Outline of the class -
- Outline of the class
- 90 minites per week (every Tuesday 250 420)
- _at_seminar room in Computing and Communications
Center - The first half (May 18th - June 8th)
- Three freshmen enjoyed simple conservation.
- The last half (June 15th - June 29th)
- Freshmen made some presentation
- Management of the class
- We had a test about connection previously.
- We used Windows Messenger as an application share
function. - We reported the state of streaming or sound in
detail.
15Case study - Members -
- International exchange on gigabit Internet
- 3 freshmen
- Tsuyoshi SATO
- Hiroki SATO
- Shin HOU
- HIJK (High Internet Project between Japan and
Korea) volunteers - Mr. Jungbuk Lee (KAIST -Korea Advanced Institute
of Science and Technology- ) - Mr. Jaehwa Lee (KT Korea Telecom- / KOREN NOC)
- Mr. Juwon Park (GIST -GwangJu Institute of
Science Technology- ) - Mr. Farrukh Aslam Khan (Cheju National Univ. )
- Mr. Seomee Choi (Chungnam National Univ. )
- Mr. Songkan Youm (Korea Univ.)
16Case study - Location of Targets -
Korea Univ.

Chungnam National Univ
Cheju National Univ
Kyushu Univ.
17Case study - Conservation Part -
- The topics of conservation were various such
as... - "What's your hobby?"
- "Have you ever been to Japan?"
- "Do you have a girlfriend?"
18Case study - Presentation Part -
- The themes of presentation are as follows
- Tsuyoshi SATO
- 2004 FIFA World Cup, Japanese cities
- Hiroki SATO
- Fukuoka city and his hometown Oita city
- Shin HOU
- History of China, his hometown Shinyou
19Case study - Pictures of the Class -
20Case study - Impression from freshmen -
- Impression for the class from freshmen
- It was precious experience to communicate with
foreign people in English. - This class had an impact because they only know
about TV phone - Low bandwidth in network
- The quality of picture is not so good.
- Improvement plan
- Freshmen and volunteer talk about one thing
- Transmit digitized presentation material
21Case study - Problems actually happened -
- Using DVcommXP with IPv6 (May 25th )
- Connect to Mr. Jaehwa Lee (Daejeon area)
- Connection failure, there are a lot of packet
loss - Overhead happened when using IPv6.
- Maybe, network component in Windows XP doesnt
work sufficiently. - Time difference (May 25th )
- Connect to Mr. Farrukh (Cheju area)
- In the morning, there are a lot of packet loss.
- In the afternoon, we can connect successfully.
- Traffic exchange in network
22Conclusion
- This class got a favorable reception from
freshmen. - DVTS could install ordinary PC and the state of
stream sending from Korea was clear and stable. - Freshmen became positive about talking to
volunteer with high quality real-time streaming. - Future works
- We will continue to exchange with Korean
volunteer using high speed Internet for this
year's freshmen. - Multi-way communication
23- Acknowledgement
- Cooperation of Korean side HIJK members as
partners of the remote class, especially six
volunteers - Three freshmen of Kyushu University
- All QGPOP KOREN members
- Genkai/Hyunhae Project
