Why does code-switching take place?
  • deficiency-driven

  • Both interpreters would interpret consistently in
    Filipino to an intended group of Filipino /
    English bilinguals
  • 2. The tendency of both interpreters to
    code-switch to English for intended monolingual
    Filipino consumers

Recommendations
  • View as strengths, and not as weaknesses.
  • Interpreters must understand and accept their own
    unique linguistic background and pursue definite
    language career goals for themselves.

  • For interpretation to bilingual consumers,
    training programs need to recognize, the
    legitimate use of code-switching by fluent
    bilinguals as a communicative strategy.
  • The potential difficulty for interpreter training
    programs is allowing code-switching in non-fluent
    bilinguals.

  • Training programs need to build on these natural
    assets
  • Testing and evaluation policy need to distinguish
    and assess specific performance indicators
    appropriately
  • Prospective clients should understand the skills
    of the interpreter they are hiring.
