Introduction
  • The first ancient Egyptians were nomads.
  • About 5000 years ago they settled on the rich
    fertile soil along the banks of the river Nile.
  • Their kings were called Pharaohs.
  • The pharaohs created a huge empire by defeating
    neighbouring tribes and taking control of their
    lands.
  • They also made slaves of these defeated tribes.

  • Egyptians adored their Pharaoh because thy
    believed he was god who came down to earth from
    the skies.
  • They thought he had the power of life or death
    over them.
  • Pharaohs had great wealth.

Pharaohs
  • They built pyramids, temples and statues to
    honour themselves and their gods.
  • Monuments were decorated with pictures and
    hieroglyphs
  • These have been preserved by the warm dry climate
    of Egypt and help show us how these people lived,
    what type of clothes they wore and food they ate.
  • Most of the messages on these monuments were
    written or drawn before the time of Jesus

  • People of Egypt were divided into many different
    classes
  • Nobles and high priest came next to the Pharaohs
  • The next class were craft workers and traders
  • Next came the ordinary workers
  • Slaves were the lowest group of importance

  • Ordinary Egyptians lived in villages along the
    river Nile
  • Homes of ordinary Egyptians were built of
    sun-dried bricks and silts for windows.
  • Their homes were cool because there was little
    room for outside heat to enter.

Cooking
  • Cooking was done over an open wood and charcoal
    fire in the courtyard.
  • Wealthy Egyptians could afford fine spacious
    homes which were built with bricks and wood.
  • Floors were covered with beautiful woollen rugs
    and large chests used to store food and clothes

  • Religion was very important in Ancient Egypt
  • Egyptians adored their gods
  • They prayed to their Gods asking them for favours
  • Egyptians wore lucky charms and made sacrifices
    to please their gods
  • Example- Statue of god Horus as falcon, at the
    Temple of Horus

  • Egyptians believed in life after death
  • In the next life they would live with their gods
  • The Pharaoh was also a religious leader
  • Pharaohs build beautiful temples as homes for
    their favourite god

Pyramids
  • As preparation for death Pharaohs built huge
    stone tombs called Pyramids.
  • These were filled with food, drink, jewellery,
    weapons and furniture.
  • They believed they would use these when they
    lived as gods in the next life.

  • There were more than 30 Pyramids built in Egypt
  • The best know pyramids are the three pyramids of
    Giza
  • Pharaoh Khufu build the largest of these, the
    Great Pyramid more than 4500 years ago
  • It is the largest stone building ever build on
    Earth!
