11Livestocks Long Shadow
- The livestock sector emerges as one of the top
two or three most significant contributors to the
most serious environmental problems, at every
scale from local to global. - The livestock sector is a major player,
responsible for 18 percent of greenhouse gas
emissions measured in C02 equivalent. This is a
higher share than transport.
12Livestocks Long Shadow
- The findings of this report suggest that it i.e.
the livestock sector should be a major policy
focus when dealing with problems of land
degradation, climate change and air pollution,
water shortage and water pollution and loss of
biodiversity. - Livestocks contribution to environmental
problems is on a massive scale and its potential
contribution to their solution is equally large.
The impact is so significant that it needs to be
addressed with urgency.

24Bad Has Become Normal
- Farm animals are genetically manipulated,
artificially bred, mutilated, confined, cruelly
beaten and killed for food - Farm animals are specifically excluded from the
federal Animal Welfare Act - Agricultural practices (considered common) are
excluded from most state anti-cruelty laws - Agriculture is exempt from many labor and
environmental laws (eg. farm minimum wage is less
than in other sectors)

43if one person is unkind to an animal it is
considered to be cruelty, but where a lot of
people are unkind to animals, especially in the
name of commerce, the cruelty is condoned and,
once large sums of money are at stake, will be
defended to the last by otherwise intelligent
people.Ruth Harrison, Animal Machines
