Biography

• Duane Hansen was a photorealist sculpture whose
  main subject were middle class Americans unable
  to achieve the American Dream.

• 1925 Born in Alexandria, Minnesota
• First solo exhibition in Michigan
• 1965 Abortion, breaks on to the American Art
  Scene
• 1967 Begins to use life size polyester resin and
  fibreglass
• 1970 Hansens subject become every day
• 1971 Contracts cancer
• 1972 Hanson becomes internationally known
• 1984 First bronze sculptures
• 1986 Honored by the King of Sweden
• 1996 Dies in Boca Raton, Florida of cancer

Materials and Technique

• uses various materials
• POLYESTER RESIN PLASTIC

  fine glass fibers

• LIFECASTING Direct three-dimensional casts of
  his model in various materials with the surface
  is painted in skin tones. Then actual clothing,
  jewelry, and other props are added to create a
  realistic look.

Purpose or Meaning

• To portray ordinary people as realistically as
  possible. Often each piece has a greater meaning
  or reflection on a controversial topic.

Elements of Art

• All of the elements are used to create a
  realistic scene. The props and accessories give
  each sculpture a personality but the scaffold,
  cooler and other construction props create a life
  like space to the whole work. The textures are
  complimentary to their real life counter parts
  the wood feels like wood the clothes are
  clothes the skin is cool to the touch. Color and
  Value are also very realistically used.

Principals of Order

• The whole work is very unbalanced and unified
  which makes the piece very realistic. Movement is
  key in all of Duane Hansens pieces- in this
  particular sculpture you can see the slight lean
  on the left leg, the weight of the bags in the
  womans hand and the hair being blown back.
• Variety is seen in all of the pieces or
  accessories. The proportions are reflections of
  the pieces real life counterpart.
