Unit
  • Our unit of the week is geared toward our nations
    military. It is important for children to learn
    about the military and its role. In our
    community, Wright Patterson Air Force Base is
    right around the corner, and many of our students
    have family that are either active duty or
    reservists. Therefore a branch of the military
    will be highlighted for a day.
  • If possible we will ask any parents that are in
    the service to come in and speak to the students
    about their jobs.

Grade Level
  • Our unit is going to focus on the first grade.
    Students are learning about the military at a
    younger age, we would like to give them a brief
    overview of each branch.
  • Several of our students have parents in the
    military.

Objectives
  • Students will learn different branches of the
    military and their function.
  • Students will learn the importance of the
    military and the importance of each branch.
  • Students will use the writing process to create
    letters/ thank you letters for a service member
    from each branch of the military.
  • Students will learn the different emblems of each
    military branch.

  • -Army- read a book, then group discussion about
    their ideas of the Army

  • -Air Force-read a book, then group discussion
    about their ideas of the Air Force

  • Art Center
  • -students will color the seal for the military
    branch of the day.
  • Writing Center
  • -students will write thank you letter to the
    service men and women of the military branch of
    the day.
  • Reading Center
  • -students will read a book of the branch of the
    day.

  • Students will use addition to count the stripes
    on different service members uniforms.
  • History Center
  • Students will be given books about the military
    branch of the day and a worksheet. They will be
    responsible for filling out a brief history of
    the branch.

Active Duty
  • Our nations military is primarily compromised of
    active duty personal. These are men and women
    whose job is the military. When they are required
    to move they transfer their lives to a new
    location. They also can be deployed for a period
    of time, in which their families can not follow.

Reserves
  • Many men and women choose to be in the military
    reserves. These are people that live and work in
    our community. They may go to work for the
    military for only a few weeks of the year. These
    service men and women can also be deployed for
    longer amounts of time but they return back to
    their homes and jobs when they are back from
    deployment.
