What are Algal Blooms?

• Sudden increase in algae in a body of water
• Can occur in freshwater and salt water
• Caused by excess in nutrients

Algal Blooms Photosynthesis

• Algae produces organic compounds from inorganic
  compounds by capturing and using energy from
  sunlight, also known as photosynthesis.

Algal Blooms Cellular Respiration

• Increases cellular respiration
• Cellular respiration requires oxygen, so it
  reduces levels of dissolved oxygen in the water

Fish Killings

• As more algae grows, other organisms, such as
  fish, die
• The algae then eat the dead matter
