Title: How Gravity Governs Our Solar System

1
How Gravity Governs Our Solar System
2
  • The Eagle nebula All nebulae are interstellar
    clouds of gas and dust.

3
  • The Boomerang nebula, a cold nebula, is formed
from slow moving gas molecules. The temperature
of this nebula is about 1 degree above absolute
    zero!

4
  • The Spider nebula, a warm nebula, is formed by
    fast moving gas particles.

5
  • Temperature is a measure of how quickly particles
in an object move around. The diagram explains
that cold particles move slowly and warm
particles move quickly. To see this, CLICK ME!
Move the bars around to see the different
    effects!

6
  • Cats eye nebula a stable nebula does not
collapse in on itself because the force of
gravity is balanced by the pressure from
    colliding particles.

7
  • A collapsing nebula surrounding a star will end
    up forming a solar system.

8
  • This is a collapsing nebula. Here, gravity
overpowered pressure and is causing the nebula to
collapse inward. Deep within it, as dust blocks
out an increasing amount of stellar ultraviolet
radiation, the cloud becomes darker and colder.

9
  • Within a solar nebula, when collisions between
gas and dust occur, the building blocks of
planets form. Below is a planetary nebula.

10
Where is the asteroid belt and why didnt they
form a planet? This diagram shows where the
asteroid belt is located between
Mars and
Jupiter
11
  • With Jupiter being the second most massive body
in our solar system, its gravitational pull has
prevented the asteroids from becoming a planet.
The suns gravity is pulling them inward, but
Jupiters gravity is pulling them outward. Thus,
they cannot come together to form a planet.

12
What other effects does gravity have on our solar
system?
13
  • Comet Hale-Bopp can be seen with two tails one
is blue, the other is yellowish. The suns
gravity has more affect on the dust tail than the
gas tail because the dust tail has more mass.
This causes the dust tail to curve toward the sun.

14
  • This diagram shows how the gas tail remains
straight and the dust tail curves.

15
  • In 1994, comet Shoemaker-Levy was torn apart by
Jupiters gravitational pull. The dark areas show
where the fragments of the comet hit Jupiter.
  • Comet Shoemaker-Levy as it was breaking apart

16
Comet destroyed in stellar crash (Apr 20, 2004)
  • Astronomers in Texas have seen a comet vaporize
into a cloud of gas as it plunged on to the fiery
surface of a hot, young star. The comet a
100km-wide body made of rock and ice was ripped
apart and destroyed by the heat of the star.
