Title: AIM

1
AIM
  • To stress the importance of good coaching.
  • To teach the occasions when coaching is used.
  • To teach what a coach must know.

2
THE AIM OF COACHING
  • To improve the cadets shooting techniques to
such a degree that he has the confidence and
ability to shoot consistently and accurately
    under all conditions.

3
FORMS OF SHOOTING
  • Grouping
  • Application of Fire

4
GROUPING
Grouping is the foundation of all good shooting.
5
A GROUP
  • Is a series of shots, not less then three, fired
at the same aiming mark with the same aim, hold
    and trigger operation.

6
  • EVEN WHEN FIRED FROM A VICE

The rifle cannot put all of its shots through the
same hole !
7
THE SHOTS FORM A GROUP
X
The Center of the Group is called the Mean Point
of Impact
8
FACTORY ACCURACY TEST FOR LA95 RIFLE
  • At 30m must group to less than 36 mm.
  • Rejected if it groups to 48 mm or more.
  • Re-test if over 36m but less than 48mm.

9
FACTORY ACCURACY TEST FOR LA95 RIFLE
  • Average group size is worked out-
  • Average under 36mm - rifle passes.
  • Average over 36mm - rifle fails.
  • e.g. First group is 42 mm Second group is 28 mm
So Average is 35 mm - PASS
  • First group is 42 mm Second group is 32
mm So Average is 37 mm - FAIL

10
THE SIZE OF A GROUP IS DETERMINED BY
A Combination of
  • THE RIFLE ...
  • THE AMMUNITION ...
  • AND THE FIRER

11
THE SIZE OF A GROUP IS DETERMINED BY
A Combination of THE RIFLE ... THE AMMUNITION
... AND THE FIRER
12
But the man makes the largest contribution !
13
The Better Firers

Produce the smaller groups
14
AN ABOVE AVERAGE GROUPER WILL ACHIEVE A 100 mm
GROUP AT 100 m
Or a 25 mm Group at 25 m
15
A BELOW AVERAGE GROUPER WILL ACHIEVE A 300 mm
GROUP AT 100 m
Or a 75 mm Group at 25 m
16
THE AVERAGE FIRER WILL ACHIEVE A200 mm GROUP AT
100 m
200 mm
100 mm
300 mm
Or a 50 mm Group at 25 mm
17
But why is it necessary to learn to group as
tightly as possible ?
  • Because of the Theory of a Group !

18
The Theory of a Group
A group expands in direct proportion to the
range from which it is fired.
100 m
19
The Theory of a Group
So at 200 m it is TWICE the size it was at 100 m
100 m
20
The Theory of a Group
At 300 m it is 3 TIMES the size.

COACHING GROUPING
  • Advising the firer and teaching him to apply the
Marksmanship Principles so that he groups tightly
    as possible.

APPLICATION SHOOTS
  • Applying the group to the target so that the best
    possible score is achieved.

30
CAREFUL ZEROING
ENSURES A CENTRAL MPI
31
A Proper Zero Ensures
Incorrect Zero
Correct Zero
That with the correct range set and no outside
influences the group will form round the Point
of Aim
32
COACHING APPLICATION
  • Outside influences will effect the position of
    the group.
  • Wind.
  • Light.
  • Effects of aiming at longer ranges (i.e. harder
    to aim).
  • Zero Errors (? ? ?).

33
COACHING APPLICATION
  • Advising and assisting firers to get the best
score by keeping their group in the correct place
    (i.e.. central).
  • Regardless of these outside influences.
  • How ?
  • By advising the firer and teaching him to
  • Read and allow for the wind
  • Adjust his sights or POA as required
