Early Decision
  • It is the responsibility of the senior student to
initiate contact with each university regarding
    their admission policy.
  • The early decision option is a binding agreement
between the student and the university that says
if admitted, the applicant will enroll in that
    institution.
  • "Students applying for early decision admissions
need to understand that, if accepted, they are
bound to pay their deposit and show up on campus
    in the fall".

4
  • Students who apply under the early decision
program may initiate applications to other
institutions provided that none of the other
applications are made under early decision.
  • The obligation explicit in the early decision
program as described here and as defined by the
College Board is a commitment on the part of the
candidate to withdraw any other applications and
to initiate no new applications if accepted under
    early decision.

5
  • "Each student can have only one early decision
application pending at a time, but can have
regular applications pending with other schools.
If granted early decision, applications with
other schools have to be withdrawn."
  • Colleges typically let students know within a
reliable and clearly stated time period whether
they have been admitted, denied, or deferred to
later consideration with the regular applicants.
  • "Early decision allows for planning on the front
end for both students and colleges. Admissions
offices want to be able to guarantee enrollment
figures as soon as possible, and many students
want to have their plans in place well before the
    end of their senior year."

6
Early Action
  • Allows the student to apply to his or her
university of choice by a specific fall deadline,
but there is no commitment to enroll if accepted.
  • It is similar to early decision, but nonbinding.
  • "Early action is very student oriented. It lets
students know if they've been accepted very early
in the process, but does not force them to make a
    decision right away.
  • Even if admitted, they still can apply to other
    schools.
  • However, the student will be required to
commit--to pay the admissions deposit--by the May
    1 national reply date.
  • Most Early Action plans allow students to apply
to other Early Action Plans as well as any
    Regular Action plan.
  • However, it is important for a senior to initiate
contact with each college regarding admission
    policies.

7
Single Choice or Restricted EA Plans
  • Yale and Stanfords Policy Single Choice Early
Action. The only stipulation is that early
applicants must agree not to file any other early
    applications.
  • You may not apply Early Action or Early Decision
    to any other school.
  • Candidates who are admitted early need not
respond to the offer of admission until May 1,
and may apply Regular Decision to other schools.
  • Students who are candidates for another college's
Early Action or Early Decision program may not
apply for Single-Choice Early Action. If you
apply early to one of these schools, you will be
asked to sign an agreement stating that you
intend to file only the early application.

8
Other Top School Admission Plans Note Some Have
Changed this year
  • One Decision Plan Harvard, Princeton,
    University of Virginia-no Early
  • Single Choice EA Stanford, Yale
  • Early Decision Duke, Cornell, University of
    Penn, Columbia
  • Early Action University of Notre Dame, Boston
    College, Loyola Marymount, Seattle University

9
ED/EA Impact on Financial Aid
  • Students who apply under either early decision or
early action are notified of estimated financial
aid packages when they are accepted.
  • Some who file an early decision application run
into financial problems if they are not accepted
and haven't applied at any other schools.
  • "Even if someone is applying early decision, it's
important to have backup plans in place for
financial reasons. Federal financial aid plans
are based on need, so timing isn't essential
(FAFSA must be in by March 1). But if students
don't apply to their second, third, and even
fourth choice schools until after they've heard
about early decision, it may be too late to
qualify for the university's merit-based aid,"
    Christiansen cautions.
  • Should a student who applies for financial aid
not be offered an award that makes attendance
possible, the student may decline the offer of
admission and be released from the Early Decision
    commitment.

10
Advantages of Early Admissions
  • Applying early can sometimes boost your chances
    of getting in.
  • One study of 14 elite schools by Harvard
researchers found that applying early decision
conferred an advantage equivalent to an extra 100
    points on the SAT.
  • Acceptance rates and the design of early plans
can change from year to year

13
Rolling Admission
  • With a rolling admissions plan, colleges admit
students who meet the admission requirements on a
first-come, first-served basis until the freshman
    class is full.

14
Regular Decision
  • A student submits an application to an
institution by a specified date and receives a
decision within a reasonable and clearly stated
period of time, but not later than April 15.

15
UC and CSU Admissions
  • University of California
  • The UC system accepts applications from
  • November 1-30.
  • It is wise to get your application completed and
sent early in November. There is a strong
possibility of admission being reversed if senior
grades are significantly different than the
    grades reflected in the application.
  • California State University
  • The CSU Application can be filed from
  • October 1-November 30

16
Important Reminders
  • Frequently check the email address you provide a
college for updates on admissions status.
  • Some campuses will establish an online portal
where you can check on application status.
  • Most campuses will only communicate through
    electronic messages.
  • Make copies of all applications filed online or
by mail in case you need to refer to them at a
    later time.
  • Print out online receipts for applications.
  • If you mail anything to a college including a
paper application use the Certificate of Mailing
slip available at the post office as proof
    applications were sent before
