Making Your Short List (Page 16)
  • Using the worksheet on page 16 of your planning
    guide, select the importance of the listed
    qualities.
  • Begin searching for colleges based on the
    qualities you have listed as essential.
  • Parents and seniors should compare their lists to
    find similarities and discuss differences.

Early Action vs. Early Decision
  • Early Action
  • Application is usually due in November, student
    hears back about acceptance before January. (only
    one EA school per student)
  • The decision is not binding.
  • Early Decision
  • Student still applies early and college replies
    before the end of the year but the agreement is
    binding. (only one ED school per student)
  • Applicants who are accepted from an Early
    Decision pool have signed an agreement in their
    applications promising to enroll at that school
    if accepted. Usually a deposit is due with the
    notice of acceptance.

  • Arrange for on or off campus interviews when
    offered.
  • Consider applying to a "rolling admissions"
    college.
  • Develop résumé, portfolio, CD/videotape, or other
    appropriate reflection of special talent, as
    advised by your counselor.
  • Meet with college representatives visiting
    Warhill to express interest and to obtain
    information.
  • Obtain Letters of Recommendation (LOR) See
    handout for details.

  • Submit applications to your counselor at least 20
    school days before the deadlines. The earlier,
    the better! This includes early action and
    early decision applications.

  • Attend college fairs.
  • Send ACT and SAT Reasoning Test / SAT Subject
    Test scores to the colleges through ACT.org and
    collegeboard.com.
  • Send Dual Enrollment grades to colleges.

  • Continue visiting selected college campuses.
  • Contact colleges to make sure all application
    materials have arrived.
  • Send first quarter grades to colleges with early
    action and early decision programs.

  • Pick up the Free Application for Federal Student
    Aid (FAFSA) form in the Counseling Center or
    access at www..fafsa.ed.gov if you will be
    applying for financial aid.
  • Withdraw other applications if you receive Early
    Decision or Early Action acceptance. Apply for
    housing where specified.
  • January
  • If applying for financial aid, submit FAFSA
    directly to Federal Student Aid Programs as soon
    after January 1st as possible. Aim for the
    February 1st deadline.
  • Meet January application deadlines.
  • Send thank you notes to teachers for writing
    recommendations.

Financial Aid
  • All students seeking financial aid must fill out
    the Free Application for Federal Student Aid
    (FAFSA).
  • Apply for PIN through FAFSA website, you MUST
    have a PIN to complete the FAFSA.
  • www.finaid.org provides information about
    additional financial aid options for students,
    but you still need to file a FAFSA first.

Subsidized vs. Unsubsidized Loans
  • Subsidized
  • Awarded on the basis of financial need. You won't
    be charged any interest before you begin repaying
    the loan because the federal government
    subsidizes the interest during this time.
  • Unsubsidized
  • You will be charged interest from the first
    disbursement until it is paid in full. The
    interest is capitalized, meaning that you pay
    interest on any interest that has already accrued.

  • Maintain a rigorous academic schedule and
    involvement in your last semester.
  • Investigate your choices thoroughly by carefully
    considering your major, college costs, living
    arrangement, etc.

  • Expect to be notified of acceptance, wait list,
    or rejection by all colleges and universities by
    mid-April.
  • See your counselor to analyze your options.
  • Inform all colleges that accept you whether you
    plan to attend or to decline final date to reply
    is the National Candidate Reply Date, May 1st!
  • If you have been placed on a "Wait List, accept
    that opportunity if you like, but be sure to
    accept and deposit at a college that accepted
    you.
  • Notify your counselor of your decision.
  • Send deposit to your selected college or
    university. Make necessary housing arrangements.
    Double depositing to two different colleges is
    never acceptable.

  • Reply on or before May 1st to report your intent
    to attend or to cancel.
  • Share your college choice with teachers who wrote
    your recommendation letters.
  • Take Advanced Placement Exams have scores sent
