So What is the Purpose???
  • A teen with a new drivers license needs time
and guidance to gain driving experience and
    skills in reduced-risk settings.
  • With the GDL System
  • The introduction to driving privileges is
gradual, so that new drivers can obtain
    sufficient instruction and driving experience.

12
Is it Really Working???
  • According to the U.S. Department of
    Transportation
  • In 2004, 14 of all drivers involved in fatal
crashes were between the ages of 15 and 20.
    (3,620)
  • HOWEVER, this group represents only 6.6 of the
    driving population.
  • The 1 cause of death for 16-24 year olds is
    related to driving collisions.

13
Is it Really Working???
  • Most crashes caused by teens occur between the
hours of 1000 pm and midnight.
  • Although young drivers do only 20 of their
driving at night, 50 of their fatalities occur
    at night.
  • - National Transportation Safety Board
  • - Insurance Information Institute

14
Is it Really Working???
  • A study released in July 2006 found that GDL
programs can reduce the incidence of fatal
crashes for 16-year old drivers by an average of
    11.
  • Every evaluation of
  • a states GDL system
  • has identified crash
  • reductions, some as
  • high as 60.
