Section A Listening test
  • The test is divided into 2 parts
  • -Part I (a presentation of about 10-20 mins)
  • - Part II (a question and answer session of
    about 10-12 minutes)
  • The topics range widely and may not necessarily
    be familiar to students. Examples are voluntary
    aid programme (1998) and logging in the
    rainforests of Sarawak (1999).

Candidates are required to listen and

  • The essays focus on argumentative writing. It

Section C Reading and language systems
  • This section is divided into 2 parts
  • - Part 1 Reading (6 of subject mark)
  • focus on reading comprehension
    with14-16 MC questions
  • - Part 2 Language system (12 of subject mark)

  • Passage 1 Reading Comprehension (MC)
  • Passage 2 MC cloze

Section D Oral test
  • Part 1 Individual presentation
  • Students are required to read a 300-350 word
    passage and take notes within 10 mins, and then
    give a 1.5-2 mins presentation about the passage.
  • Part 2 Group discussion
  • Students are given a situation and are asked
    to participate in a group discussion for 10 mins.
    (preparation time 2 mins)

Section E Practical skills for work and study
  • Candidates are given a situation and a role, and
    then are asked to complete three tasks using the
    information in a Data File, which is generally
    about 11 pages long.
  • Task 1 is always a writing task e.g. a letter,
    article or report. Candidates need to use
    skimming and scanning skills to collect
    information from about 7 pages of the Data File.
  • Tasks 2 and 3 are generally simpler tasks using a
    smaller number of texts.

Reading to learn
  • 1.  write a newspaper report at least once every
    two weeks.
  • 2.   read at least two English books and hand in
    one book report after the Chinese New Year
    Holiday and the other one after the Easter
    Holiday. Assessment of students performance in
    the first one will account for 30 of the 2nd
    Test (15 marks added to Paper A and another 15
    added to Paper C).

Listening
  • have listening practice once every cycle. The
    materials will be from the textbook Complete
    Exam Practice, past exam papers and
    supplementary exercises.

    television

Writing
  • Students will be split into two smaller groups,
    each containing 16-18 students.
  • The students will be required to write a minimum
    of eight compositions year.

Reading and language Systems
  • The exercises in the textbook Complete Exam
    Practice, past exam papers and supplementary
    exercises from other sources will be used.
  • As most of the students are rather weak in
    grammar, useful language exercises will be given
    to students too.

Oral
  • The students will have one oral lesson every
    cycle.
  • The class will be split into two groups to
    encourage student participation.
  • There will be practice in presentation skills and
    group discussion skills to prepare the students
    for the public examination.
  • Other oral activities and language games can also
    be used to enhance their speaking skills.

Practical Skills for Work Study
  • The exercises in the textbook Complete Exam
    Practice will mainly be used.
  • The students may also be assigned to do past exam
    papers and supplementary exercises.

Inclusion of coursework in assessment

    will be part of assessment in Half-yearly
    Examination and Annual Examination (20 marks to
    be counted towards Paper E).

  • Performance in class students

    English for communication in class.

    meet task demands and punctuality in submitting
    homework.
