What is a PEP?
  • A PEP is a Personal Education Plan for focused
    intervention that is tailored to address specific
    individual needs or weaknesses.

Why is the PEP important?
  • It provides targeted academic support/assistance
    to students who need it.
  • It documents the school and teachers efforts to
    support the needs of students who are functioning
    below grade level.
  • Its the Law! We must do this for every child who
    fails to meet the requirements of the Student
    Accountability Standards Act.

Former PEP Law
  • " 115C-105.41. Personal Education Plans shall be
    written as early as can be done for students who
    have been placed at risk of academic failure as
    determined by the State end-of-grade tests.

    EDUCATION PLANS FOR STUDENTS AT RISK OF
  • ACADEMIC FAILURE.

What the Law Requires
  • Local school administrative units shall identify
    students who have been placed are at risk for
    academic failure.
  • Identification shall occur as early as can
    reasonably be done and can be based on grades,
    observations, State assessments, and other
    factors that impact student performance that
    teachers and administrators consider appropriate,
  • without having to await the results of
    end-of-grade or end-of-course tests.

Exceptional Children
  • Students with an IEP are not required to have a
    PEP.

Deadline
  • No later than the end of the first quarter, or
    after a teacher has had up to nine weeks of
    instructional time with a student, a personal
    education plan for academic improvement with
    focused intervention and performance benchmarks
    shall be developed or updated for any student at
    risk of academic failure who is not performing at
    least at grade level, as identified by the State
    end-of-grade test and other factors noted above.

Parent/Guardian Involvement
  • Local school administrative units shall give
    notice of the personal education plan and a copy
    of the personal education plan to the student's
    parent or guardian.
  • Parents should be included in the implementation
    and ongoing review of personal education plans.
  • No cause of action for monetary damages shall
    arise from the failure to provide or implement a
    personal education plan under this section."
  • SECTION 2. This act is effective when it becomes
    law and applies beginning with the 2009-2010
    school year.

Parent/Guardian Involvement
  • The Invitation to Conference letter will be
    sent home for students who are at risk for
    academic failure.
  • Document all efforts to obtain the signature of
    the parent or guardian.

What should be included in a PEP?
  • The Student Accountability Standards Act
    Requires
  • A Diagnostic Evaluation Component
  • Intervention Strategies
  • A Monitoring Component that includes
  • Parental Involvement

PEPs Are Personalized.
  • Strengths and weaknesses are unique to the
    individual. It is unlikely that all students will
    have the same strengths and weaknesses.

Signatures
  • Must be authentic. Stamps are not allowed since
    this is a legal document.
  • Certified teachers and administrators are
    required to sign PEPs.
  • Classified personnel are not allowed to sign
    PEPs.
  • The student signature is required, as well. Make
    every effort to get all required signatures.

Where to House PEPs
  • PEPs are working documents and need to be easily
    accessible. It is recommended that they be
    stored in a locked area in the classroom.
  • They are to be readily available for state
    auditors, administrators, and lead teachers upon
    request.

Cumulative Folders
  • PEPs are to be filed in the students cumulative
    records at the end of the school year.
  • If a student transfers during the school year,
    the cumulative folder must include the PEP. The
    cumulative folder cannot leave the school without
    the PEP.

    website at www.robeson.k12.nc.us .
  • From there, go to Departments, K-8 Curriculum.
  • In the left margin, you will see Personalized
    Education Plan.
  • You will find the Invitation to Conference
    letter and the PEP template.

Note
  • PEPs must be completed by the beginning of the
    2nd nine weeks and revised/monitored at the end
    of the 2nd, 3rd and 4th nine weeks.
  • High school PEPs must be completed by the
    beginning of the second nine weeks and
    revised/monitored at the end of each semester.
  • Please sign and date each time a PEP is revised.
  • Your principal must sign (not stamp) all of your
    PEPs.
  • Principals can require PEPs for K-2.
