  • Staff Advisors - assigned by major
  • For NursingStaff Advisors only

Each Academic Department makes the decision on
how academic advising responsibilities will be
shared.

  • We provide course planning help for general
    education, major requirements, and other
    University graduation requirements.
  • We complete the initial review of your
    transcripts upon entry to the University, and we
    provide the evaluations for graduation.
  • We are here to help you reach your educational
    goals!

Your Nursing Faculty
  • The faculty in your major are vital MENTORS for
    you take the time to get to know your faculty!
  • Faculty are the experts in your field of study
    learn from them outside of the class as well as
    in class.
  • Faculty offer career guidance and would welcome
    the opportunity to discuss graduate school
    preparation with you.
  • See your faculty to explore Internship or
    Independent Study opportunities -- Every student
    should aim to complete at least one Internship in
    their Senior Year.

Computer Competency Requirement (CCR)
  • Two semesters in which to fulfill this
    requirement Spring 2007 and Fall 2007
  • Can take free exam take as many times as need be
    to pass
  • Four modules, which can be passed separately.
  • For exam schedules and study guides, visit

  • Or can take CS 100 (1 unit, self-paced, computer
    class) and then take CCR exam.

Language-Other-Than-English Requirement
  • Foreign language up through the first semester or
    higher of the Intermediate level (3 semesters)
  • ANY CSUSM 201 Foreign Language course
  • Will accept any foreign language taught at a
    Community College or other accredited university.
  • AP/IB/CLEP Exam Credit
  • Passing a Proficiency Exam here
  • Credit by Exam at a Community College
  • Approved Study Abroad Programs

Note High School foreign language will not
clear this requirement, unless you passed an
AP/IB/CLEP language exam with an acceptable score

Passing a Proficiency Exam
  • If you are proficient in a language other than
    English you can test out of the requirement.
  • There is a fee for the test (49.50)
  • For information and test dates

  • Virtually any language
  • (e.g., Farsi, Swahili, Swedish, etc.)
  • If registering for a foreign language course, be
    aware that you will need to show proof that you
    have met the prerequisite within the past two
    years.
  • Be prepared to show the instructor an unofficial
    college transcript on the first day of class.
    Most colleges now allow you to obtain unofficial
    copies of your coursework and grades online.

  • Use your Advising Worksheet (Nursing) to keep
    track of meeting your GE requirements, which are
    built into the Nursing major.
  • The CSU system has adopted lower-division GE
    requirements (Areas A E)
  • Cal State San Marcos has upper-division GE

    you will have completed 60 CSU units.

Satisfying the American Institutions Requirement
  • If not already fulfilled with transfer
    coursework, the Cal State San Marcos approved
    classes are
  • DH - (fulfills U.S. History portion)
  • History 130 OR History 131 (3 units)
  • AND
  • DC DG - (fulfills U. S. Constitution and
    California Government portion)
  • Political Science 100 (3 units)
  • One of these courses can count for GE Area D

Minimum Grade Point Average
  • You must maintain a 2.0 G.P.A. (C average)
  • Cumulative (transfer work and CSUSM)
  • Cal State San Marcos coursework
  • Major coursework may require a higher GPA
  • Failure to meet these minimum standards my result
    in Academic Dismissal (disqualification) from the
    University

Transfer of Coursework
  • All CSU transferable coursework and grades
    completed at other regionally-accredited
    colleges/universities can be transferred here to
    Cal State San Marcos to apply towards your
    degree.
  • A maximum of 70 units from community colleges are
    allowed to count towards the unit total needed to
    graduate
  • Nursing 133-134 Units
  • College/University Transfer Credit Approval Form
    for Major Requirements not articulated at
    Community Colleges. This form is available on
    the Nursing Web site (www.csusm.edu/nursing)
    under Current Students.

Avoid Walk-Away Fs
  • Make sure to double check your registered courses
    in SMART Web
  • You can add/drop classes in SMART Web for the
    first two weeks only
  • After the last day of the Add/Drop period, you
    will have to submit a petition if you want/need
    to drop a course
  • The petition process is not an automatic approval
  • The Spring 2007 semester begins on Saturday,
    January 20th
  • January 20 - February 2 is the Add/Drop Period
    for Spring 2007
  • It is not an Instructors responsibility to drop
    you from a class if you fail to drop a class,
    you get a WU F

CSUSM Email Account today!
  • Your CSUSM email account is how the University,
    your instructors, and your Advisors will be
    communicating with you.
  • Once activated, access your CSUSM email account
    via the University Web site, under WebMail.

How to make an Advising Appointment
  • All Advising appointments are made online through
    the Universitys Web Scheduler
  • http//www.csusm.edu/Academic_AdvisingClick on
    APPOINTMENTS at the top
  • Appointments are always made for the following
    week.
  • Bring a Photo ID with you to your Advising
    appointments with us.

Odds and Ends --Important Info!
  • You are responsible for knowing Important Dates
    each semester info available on Web
  • At least 40 units must be Upper-Division
  • Upper-Division courses are numbered 300-400
  • At least 30 units must be completed at Cal State
    San Marcos.
  • Know the rules if you plan to take a break from
    school it is your responsibility to find out
    consequences ask your Advisor.
  • You must apply to graduate almost a year in
    advance.

  • Check for important attributes and footnotes
    before registering for a course.
  • Read the course descriptions and look up any
    pre-requisites in your Cal State San Marcos
    Catalog.

Additional Seats/Courses
  • Your goal is to get registered for at least one
    course today.
  • Once registered in one class, you can add
    additional courses and change your schedule via
    SMART Web from home.
  • During each Registration period, remember to
    check the Class Schedule for additional seats or
    courses to open up.
  • Resident Payment deadline is 5 p.m. January
    4th! If adding a course after Jan.4th, payment
    is due at time of registration.
  • Non-Resident Payment deadline in Jan. 20th

Getting Ready to Register -- How to Read the
Online Class Schedule
  • Lets go to the Online Class Schedule
  • Current Students Quick Links
    Class Schedule, Calendar Fees
  • Attributes Footnotes and Attributes gives
    important information about pre- requisites,
    class locations, etc.
  • CRN Course Registration Number. This is the
    actual number that you will use to register for
    a course.
  • Time Time of day class meets. We use Military
    time. Subtract 1200 from unfamiliar times.
  • Days Days the class meets be sure to check
    for different locations on different days. TR
    means that a class meets on Tuesdays and
    Thursdays TTuesdays and RThursdays
  • Location Tells the building and room number
    for on-campus locations. TEME CULA means the
    class is being offered in Temecula or
    Murrieta Be alert!
  • Available Seats Shows you if seats are still
    available in a particular class. If the
    number is 0 you have the option of trying to
    crash the class.

  • Admission -- Being admitted to the University
    does not guarantee your admission into a specific
    Nursing program.
  • Pre-Nursing Students -- must apply separately to
    the School of Nursing to enter an actual Nursing
    program

Important GPA, Course-Grade Requirements, and
admission requirements vary by Nursing Program
