2Speyer- An Overview
- in Germany
- in Rheinland-Pfalz, a state of Germany
- first settled in 500 B.C. by Celts, and later by
the Romans - has the largest Romanesque cathedral in Germany
3History of Speyer
- Speyer was originally inhabited by Celts in 500
B.C. In 10 B.C., a Roman camp was established on
what is now Speyer. Germany's largest Romanesque
cathedral, the Speyer Dom, was started in 1030 by
Emperor Conrad II. It was finished in 1061.
During the First Crusade, the Jews living in
Speyer were massacred. Speyer became a free city
when the bishop lost some of his power in 1294.
French soldiers destroyed most of Speyer in 1689.
The 2000th anniversary was in 1990.
4People of Speyer
- Most of the people in Speyer speak German
because it's in Germany. A famous person from
Speyer is Anselm Feuerbach, a painter who went to
the art schools of Dusseldorf, Munich, Antwerp,
and Paris. The only classical music broadcaster
to be named to the Radio Hall of Fame is Karl
Haas, who was born in Speyer. There has
historically been a large Jewish population in
this area, even though they have been constantly
persecuted. Another famous artist from Speyer is
Hans Purrmann, who became friends with Henri
Matisse.

6Geography and Location of Speyer
- Speyer is located on the Rhein, and in
Rheinland-Pfalz. It is a major city, but it is
not the capital (Mainz is the capital). Speyer
has about 50,000 inhabitants, and is 25
kilometers away from Mannheim and Ludwigshafen.
It has no industrial specialty, but it is a
popular tourist destination.The main tourist
attractions are the Speyer Dom, the Technik
Museum, the Altpörtel and Sea Life. Now that the
Rhein has been cleaned up, it is safe for
swimming.
7In the European Union, the EU, you can tell where
a car is from by the license plate. For example,
Speyer is SP, Frankfurt is F, and Germersheim is
GER. You can also tell how big a city is by how
many letters it has. A large city will only have
one or two letters, while a more obscure one will
have up to three letters.
Speyer is the red dot on the map.
8My Experiences in Speyer
- I have visited Speyer several times, and I have
always enjoyed it. I have only been inside the
cathedral once or twice, but I still think it is
very majestic. One time my brother and I went
into a store while my cousins, sisters, mother,
aunt and grandmother kept walking. When we got
out of the store, we couldn't see them, so we
decided to wait at the cathedral. They found us
in ten minutes or so, and it was not a problem. I
have also been to the Technik Museum, which has
planes, automobiles, and also a submarine. It was
very interesting because we got to go into the
submarine and some of the jets.
