Title: To define, and differentiate between, management styles

1
Aims For Today
  • To define, and differentiate between, management
    styles

2
Authoritarian
  • An authoritarian approach involves a leader
making the decisions themselves and then telling
    others what to do.

3
Democratic
  • A democratic approach involves allowing
participants to get involved in decision-making -
perhaps through a teamwork approach. The role of
the leader is to help to create the teamwork
structures and to encourage the teams to take
    responsibility for decision-making.

4
Paternalistic
  • A paternalistic approach is reminiscent of the
way fathers treat children i.e. deciding what is
best for them. The approach is autocratic, though
decisions are intended to be in the best
    interests of the workforce.
  • The leader is likely to explain the reasons for
    his/her decisions.
  • The paternal company treats its workforce like a
family, taking care of social needs

5
Which is the best?!
  • Use the right approach in the right setting.
  • In many situations the consultative and
democratic approaches will be more motivating
because the leader is placing more responsibility
in ground level employees, encouraging them to
    feel involved.
  • When employees are involved in decision making
they are far more likely to 'take ownership' of
the initiative and be committed to making sure
    that it works in practice.

6
Which is the best?!
7
Consultation
  • Asking for views of those who will be affected by
a decision. These views should then be taken into
account by the person responsible for making the
    decision.
  • Consultation keeps power at the top

8
Delegation
  • Passing authority down the hierarchy. It involves
giving junior managers greater trust and
authority, and requires the senior to release
    control
  • Delegation passes decision making powers down the
    hierarchy

9
Empowerment
  • A more advanced form of delegation whereby
subordinates have more wide ranging control over
    their work
  • The freedom to decide what to do, and how to do
    it.

10
Centralisation
  • Centralisation is drawing decision making powers
from the local or lower-level parts of an
organisation and concentrating them in the head
    office or centre.
  • Pros consistent policies throughout the
    organisation / Quick decisions without
    consultation
  • Cons Reduced input of day to day experts /
    demoralises branch managers

11
De-centralisation
  • Decentralisation means devolving power from head
office to local branches. Includes passing
decision making down the line, and accepting
less uniformity in how things are done.
  • Pros can empower local managers, motivating them
/ reduces day to day communication from head
office, focusing senior managers on strategy
  • Cons Reduced uniformity may unsettle customers
(Mc Ds one slice of gherkin!) / head office has
lots of info and may be in best position to take
    many decisions

12
Task
  • Research 3 leaders and determine which leadership
    style you think they are
  • http//www.leader-values.com

13
Homework
  • Analyse a news article
  • If possible, choose one related to the management
styles, and determine which of the ones we have
examined today it links closest to
  • Entrepreneur, football manager, political leader
