Skills for a Changing World Embracing Diversity
  • Key elements
  • Developing strategies for embracing diversity
    through a Diversity Action Challenge
  • Groups of 5-10 students
  • Work through a series of action challenges
    related to key diversity principles
  • Keep a diversity action challenge journal write
a paragraph reflecting on the specific action
    challenge
  • Create a collage of newspaper/magazine examples
    of diversity issues
  • Examples to be proud of
  • Examples that we are saddened by
  • Reflect on why the example is one to be proud of
or saddened by, and draw out key lessons that can
    be learnt from these examples

6
Skills for a Changing World Embracing Diversity
  • Key elements continued
  • Diversity in learning/career options students
each research one learning option or career of
relevance to one of their supplementary modules
and produce a simple poster/website that
  • Outlines the learning option/career
  • Presents the positive and negative aspects of
    that choice
  • Reflects on the type of people best suited to
    that learning option/career
  • Each group is assigned a culture/group (not
limited to South Africa) and have to research
important celebrations in that culture, such as
    weddings, religious celebrations, special
    holidays and so on.

7
Skills for a Changing World Embracing Diversity
  • Celebration Day
  • Each group presents (in any way they choose)
examples of the cultural celebrations they
    researched this could include performances,
    examples of foods, costumes etc

    to prepare their celebration
  • Reflective essay on the three most important
lessons learnt in preparing for and participating
    in the Celebration Day

  • Comments
  • Assuming 10 notional hours
  • Keep action challenge in module
  • Focus on broader level
  • So what why should I do this?
  • Invading personal space
  • Treat challenge like a game do it all together
  • Part of orientation day, reflect on orientation
experience, mechanisms for sharing later in
programme, go deeper as the year progresses

    diversity

  • Rubric content, design and presentation,
individual contribution and reflection on poster
  • Pairs work well, nice to have something for
    celebration day
  • Well known event and how people have responded to
    that
  • Poster can become superficial
  • More qualitative, how did those people feel etc
  • How to use posters correctly
  • Thematic collage

    specific incident

people to find out things about careers

  • Can choose how to display this group at
    celebration day
