Stem Fellow - Lorraine Levinson

• Students are enjoying the Engineering Design
  Process through hands-on activities.
• Career Day was held January 13th - for the second
  year, we invited engineers from Raytheon and it
  was very successful.

• In the Classroom, Lorraine Levinson finished a
  mini unit on bridges. Students studied bridge
  designs and were given the challenge of building
  the strongest bridge out of only spaghetti and
  masking tape. The bridge had to hold a brick.

• JoAnn Lakow is mentoring 4 students at Marsh
  (that might be interested in Engineering Careers)
  by working with them and the Mindstorm kit we
  received! 
• In addition, she has been a resource for the
  guidance department at the Marsh.

• Tenney 8th grade is using an engineering design
  project, from the design camp class, on bridges
  in the spring.
• Tenney 5th grade is piloting Engineering is
  Elementary.
• Robotics is offered in the afterschool program
  and summer program.

• Guidance is developing a Careers in Math
  Science day.
• Attended the NELMS Math and Science Conference
  and will be offering a workshop in the fall of
  2006.
• Attended the Northeast Grants Collaborative
  Start-up proposal meeting, for the Summer Aquatic
  Science Institute.

• The new budget proposal will include funds for
  math/science teaching facilitators for the
  buildings.
• Ongoing implementation of the new math curriculum.

• Training was held in November 2005.
• Grades 1-6 focus group that met for 10 hours
• Follow-up training for teachers in grades 6-8
  was held on February 2.
• Participation of L. Perry and J. Lakow on the
  Math PIM Team, Spring 2005
• Development of a team to write the math scope and
  sequence for grades 1-8 program.

• Development of a team of teachers to discuss the
  current Science Curriculum, February 2006.
• Discussion held with the Director of Math,
  Science and Technology for implementation of
  Interactive Bulletin Board. Anticipated
  implementation, September 2006.

• Camp Invention is a hands-on summer camp that
  runs for two weeks during the summer. It offers
  kids a chance to get wild and crazy about science
  (while they learn!!!).
• This is the second year the camp has run in
  Methuen.
